Received a 22-oz bottle via trade with Sully. Pours a hazy caramel amber colored brew with a decent beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring and some spotty lacing. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, roasted dark malt and even some Irish rye whiskey. Taste quite complex with profiles of rye and bourbon whiskey, toffee, vanilla and even some sweet apple. Finish is semi-sweet, bourbon presence, yet quite smooth in texture and then flavor. Alcohol is well hidden in the special release. hopscotch (11101) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - OCT 7, 2010
Bottle… Clear, dark ruby ale with a small, fizzy, lightly tanned head. Decent retention. The aroma furnishes a boatload of caramelized brown sugar alongside lesser notes of bourbon, oak, rye whiskey and spicy grains. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. The sweet flavor offers caramel and rye whiskey tempered by modest bitterness. Rich, buttery toffee finish. Thanks to growler for sharing this whiskey-loaded, malty beer! j12601 (11943) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - OCT 15, 2010
Bottle at a tasting at Paul’s place. Pours a hazed ruby brown with a thin beige head. Spicy rye and caramel, with a light amount of alcohol present. Bourbon, spicy rye, more bourbon fueled vanilla. Malty, thick and delicious. Sweet and malty finish. Nice stuff. Suttree (6392) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - OCT 17, 2010
Nice brew - god mix of rye flavors, mixed with caramel and molasses - in fact it may drift a little towards being too sweet. Some boozy notes as it warms. Enjoyable beer. Sampled at 2010 pre-Brewer’s Jam tasting. scrizzz (2223) - Bothell, Washington, USA - DEC 22, 2010
Thanks riversideak! Ruby amber, thick fizzy off white head. Strong barrel, sweet toasty caramel and charcoal. Big bourbon notes, sweet molasses middle, softens to a rich chewy caramel finish.

Bottle picked up at Julio’s courtesy of mixylplik3, thanks for the opportunity Matt.
Pours a deep dark brown with deep garnet highlights and a huge off white head that slowly dissipates but never totally falls. Nice nose. Smell is sweet with candy sugar and dark fruit mixed with some vanilla oak and bourbon. Some light caramel/toffee in the aroma but no hint of rye that I could find. Taste is sweet up front, kind of reminds me of an old ale at first. Light caramel, toffee, and sweet cherries lead off the race but are quickly overcome by bourbon and oak. Spicy rye pokes its head up quickly but is shut down by a mild higher alcohol burn. Long lingering sugared dark fruit sweetness in the finish. Medium body and a surprising level of creaminess in the mouthfeel. Light to medium level of carbonation. I love what this beer can become, but I feel that right now the flavors are less than harmonious. The alcohol burn needs to mellow a bit and the flavors need to meld. I enjoyed this beer but I think with a little age this one will become fantastic. I wish I had more of this to age.

Base beer is a sweet malty rye ale. Bourbon aging this type of beer is going to take it over but the bourbon used is awesome, elegant complex vanilla and bourbon all of the palate and nose of this beer. Lightest beer I have enjoyed from smuttynose. They usually can’t make anything that isn’t a porter or stout. dnstone (3418) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - JAN 12, 2012
Ruby-copper-brown in color. with some off white head. Syrupy sweet aroma of grains oak and booze. Sweet graininess with strong woody/boozey highlights. A bit warming at the end. The bourbon might be a bit overwhelming of the underlying beer, but I still like it! Niko100 (2913) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 1, 2012
Dark amber/cider color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of sweet malt, oak, vanilla, and some bourbon; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel, rye, hops, some dark fruit, and bourbon; Finish is dry and slightly bitter; Nicely balanced & complex; Overall, very interesting brew - I enjoyed it. jredmond (8285) - New York, New York, USA - JAN 15, 2013
Bottle brought to Vinny’s January 2013 tasting. Pours a deep hazy reddish amber body with no head or lacing. Aroma is sweet molasses, bourbon, maple syrup and faint dark fruits. Mouthfeel is slightly boozy, with ntoes of maple, fruit malts, molasses, light vanilla, rye, and oak barrel. This beer reminded me very much of founder Backwoods bastard and Better Half. Nice.
