Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours dark brown with a transient fizzy head and a strong rye whiskey aroma. There is a full-bodied treacle and anise flavor with lots of tasty whiskey. This 2010 beer has aged very nicely. bhensonb (15609) - Woodland, California, USA - JAN 25, 2016
Bottle from jredmond. Pours dark coppery brown with a fizzy, transient beige head. Smells like rye barley wine from very nice bourbon barrels. Full bodied or nearly. Flavor is moderately dark fruit, brown sugar/treacle. Not at all towards dry, with no bitter. But the heat doesn’st show much and the flavors are outstandingly impressive. Age has not dulled its style. Joel (114) - Massachusetts, USA - JAN 4, 2015
I wish I could still get my hands on this and I’m hopeful that someday they will brew this again. Pours murky brown with a thick white head. Aromas of caramel and vanilla. Complex and flavorful… rye, bourbon, caramel, toffee, raisins. Followed up with only a slight hops finish. Very unique flavors, only slightly sweet. Seemed stronger than 8%. Very good! A- Pours a dark brown color with hints of copper and a 1.5 finger, tan head.
S- Bourbon, rye, vanilla, oak.
T- Caramel, raisin, fig, bourbon and deep rye notes.
M- Thick with medium carbonation.
D- Extremely drinkable and just got better as it warmed. Incredible take on a rye beer ... wish I had more. hopdog (12953) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 21, 2014

A: Brownish/Mild Amber Hue, Passes Little Light, Off White Head, Mild Lacing
S: Vanilla. Oaky, Molasses, Mild Caramel
T: Bourbon, Vanilla, Caramel, Molasses, Mild Rye
M: Average Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Semi Sweet
Overall, a nice beer but the bourbon barrel take away from the rye flavor too much in my opinion. jtclockwork (17070) - , New Jersey, USA - JUL 24, 2013
Bottle. Pours burnt amber with tan head. Nose and taste of bourbon, oak, whiskey, rye, caramel malt, dark fruit, prune, toffee candy, burnt caramel and vanilla. Medium body. Finishes with a slight alcohol burn. ineedbeer (2230) - Oakland, California, USA - MAY 20, 2013
I believe this is a 2011 bottle.
Aroma is nice and complex with lots of sweet malt character balanced by bourbon barrel notes. Lots of dark caramel with a hint of chocolate and roast. Quite a bit of rye spice present as well along with some toasted bread. Some fruitiness is also present with prunes and raisins. Some burnt sugar is also present. Light bourbon, oak and vanilla.
Pours a burnt amber with some light brown highlights, but on the whole the beer tends towards red more than brown. Very thin light tan head that quickly recedes to the edges. Light lacing.
Flavor is very similar to aroma but with an lot more bourbon character. There is a lot of sweet fruit notes upfront with prune, raisin and fig. There is quite a bit of malt character as well with dark caramel, roast, caramelized sugar and toffee. Light burnt toast notes. Mid to late palate you get a lot of barrel character with a lot of bourbon, oak and vanilla. Light rye spice and some alcohol heat finish out the flavor. Fairly low bitterness, this definitely is on then sweet side.
Mouth feel is medium to medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Astringency is low to medium low and alcohol warmth is medium low. Its a very sweet beer but it isn’t sticky like you would expect considering the sweetness.
Overall a very nice, complex beer with good fruit and malt character. The bourbon barrels are well integrated in the aroma but a bit strong in the flavor. The beer is on the sweet side, too much so. ThirstyBird (2992) - Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - MAR 7, 2013
Old rating from 2010. Appears slightly hazy reddish brown with a tan head that goes to a ring. Smell is rich malt, vanilla, light smooth bourbon. Taste is sweet rich malt, smooth bourbon - delicious. Medium body nicely carbonated and smooth. A very tasty beer. Marheb (6024) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 2, 2013
Une instable bombe de whiskey, assez épicé, vanillé dans un corps moyen. L’alcool n’est pas si bien dissimulé, voyons voir avec l’age.
