Seeing as how this has been broken out, and that the site view on barrel treatments has evolved, I have moved this old rating of the Smutty Barleywine that I tried previously. Here was my first rating, transferred over: This was an oak barrel aged version, on tap. I would list it as a new beer, but I remember Oakes’ admonish that oak barrel aging does not make a new beer. In any case, medium amber, little head. Big alcohol and prunish nose. Flavor almost medicinal, reminiscent of Robo. Syrupy, alcohol laden, and disjointed. I truly think the barrel treatment did this beer no good. Will try to find a bottled version for a rerate at some point. On tap at 3rd Annual FoBAB in Chicago. Medium copper pour with a light off-white head. Nose of sweet caramel, oak, chocolate, vanilla, and a solid amount of bourbon. Aroma carried through very well to the flavor... and the the bourbon complemented the other flavors very well. Medium-bodied and sticky-sweet on the palate, with a smooth caramel, dark fruit, and bourbon finish. Enjoyed this one.
