Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the ďAmerican Brown AleĒ style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.
Old Brown Dog has been around for many years. It was first brewed in 1988 at the Northampton Brewery. In 1989 it won a silver medal in its category (American Brown Ale) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. It has since been retired from competition but enjoys love and respect from people all over the world.

Bottled. Brown coloured with a small off white head. Sweet malty aroma with spicy notes. Sweet perfumed flavour dominated by malts with notes of anise. Dry hoppy finish. Thanks Jacob for sharing.

Old Brown Dog was a good American Brown Ale to enjoy during a lazy summer afternoon at the Jersey Shore. Hoppier than what Iím used to in a brown ale. Nice toasted aroma, and caramel flavor.

Bottle 12oz - Pours light brown with a beautiful creamy tan head that laces well as you drink it. Deliciously aromas of caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and molasses fill the air above this one. Fantastic flavors of malts, caramel, milk chocolate, and vanilla blend to a nutty slightly bitter finish from the well balanced hops. On the palate this is a little thicker, smoother, and creamier than others of this style that Iíve tried. This is a fine nut brown and one I could certainly drink again.

Aroma of my Auntís awesome pea and matzah-ball soup. Awesome. I recognized the smell right away and was shocked when I realized what it was and how un-beerlike that was. Doesnít mean itís not good :) I poured quite vigourlessly and developed virtually no head. Unfortunately I was tasting this right out of the fridge as my mom was drinking it, so I couldnít really pinpoint many flavors. Still, though, flavor didnít seem too complex. Palate was a typical medium. Iíll perhaps rerate flavor when I can drink this a bit warmer.

Pours a darkish red/brown color with a beige head. Aroma is all malt and molasses. Not usually my favorite style of ale but this is one of the best tasting brown Iíve had. Huge malt backbone with a sweet carmel and nut flavor. A little hop flavor in the finish. Pretty smooth, too.

Bottle. Brewed and bottled: 02/05. Dark amber pour with a thick light-khaki head that leaves some good lacing. Sour aroma of nuts, malts and old garbage or farts. Thankfully, it tastes much better than it smells. Copious amounts of roasty, nutty malts and a bit of a bitter hoppy finish. Some cocoa and hints of chocolate are present. The finish is too sour though.

Out of a bottle fills the glass with dark amber/brown, quickly dissolving white head laced nicely. Taste was ok but nothing too extroardinary, nutty flavor maybe a hint of caramel. Easy drinking but nothing outstanding. Would drink again.

Great beer that definitely benefits from a serving temp of higher than 50 degrees. Great malt flavors balanced with a deft inclusion of just the right amount of hops. Solid.

Pours a dark reddish-brown with a tiny tan head. Smell is very very malty. Almost a sour malt. Taste hits with a sour, rich malt. Big malt. Lightly hoppy finish. Tangy caramel and molasses undertones. Milk chocolate flavors as it warms. Full bodied with a hoppy aftertaste. Damn good brown ale. If you like malty brews, this is a good one to seek out. Nice!

UPDATED: JUN 18, 2005 The pour was a reddish brown color with a tan head that held up well and laced the glass on the way down. The aroma is malted hops with a very complex taste that went from sweet to hoppy to nutty to bitter on the palate. The finish was dry and nutty.
