COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the American Brown Ale style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.
Old Brown Dog has been around for many years. It was first brewed in 1988 at the Northampton Brewery. In 1989 it won a silver medal in its category (American Brown Ale) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. It has since been retired from competition but enjoys love and respect from people all over the world.

I love this beer; its probably my favorite beer classified on RateBeer as a brown ale. Its moderately hoppy without being overwhelming, and it seems to achieve a balance that Id like...relatively dry for a brown ale, not as much as some stouts but enough that its refreshing. Seems pretty complex too. I became a huge fan of this beer when I live in CT and it was pretty widely available; here in PA I drink it less only because its less available. Its described as full-bodied but to me, in spite of its high ABV, this beer has a certain lightness to it, perhaps because its a little less sweet.

Malt bomb city, caramel and toffee and sweet tea on top of mild, almost undetectable hops. Much more English than the description would lead you to believe, with apple esters and the teensiest bit of floral bitterness falling squarely in Brit territory. Looks...weird, lots of particulate swirling around amid the brown haze, and the nose is flat malt and sweet apple. Palate feels a bit off, too, undercarbonated, which might be why it seems so damn sweet. Still drinkable, though.

Pours hazy cream soda brown with little head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Taste follows with some nice sharpness. Molasses, brown sugar and real depth of flavor. Very mild backend bitterness. Touch of hop only. Excellent brown ale. I could drink a lot of these. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Another favorite I was disappointed to find I hadnt yet rated. On tap. Clear brown. Fine white head. Nose is roast grain, tied right to the palate. Sweet honey roasted grains, maybe a syrup tease. Perfect early winter fireside slugger. This beer never disappoints.
