UPDATED: JUN 24, 2008 New rating: On tap at Portsmouth Brewing. Bright golden colour with a malt-accented nose. Slight spiciness but more malt as well. Rounded, full, malty character is very clean and well-balanced.

Old rating: You have to love Smokeless Joe for bringing in anything he can get his hands on, including the Smutty range. Portsmouth Lager has a caramel-like colour, a touch of smoke, dried peaches and white grapes in the nose a rich sweetness in the caramelly malt palate. 7 3 6 3 13 is equal to 3.2

(10/17/08) Bottle at friends’ house in Philadelphia (thanks David T). Clear golden with quite a bit of carbonation and a small white head. Aroma has nice hoppiness with grassy notes, some malty bready hints and a bit of caramel. Sweetish flavor with some malt, light breadiness, light buttery hints and a nice bitter hoppy finish. Medium-bodied. A nice Lager.

Clear amber body with small beige head. Aroma is strongly hoppy -- floral and German hops. Taste is slightly sweet up front, before turning to a decent German hop bitterness that lasts beyond the swallow.

Lubiere (13915) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - APR 3, 2004
Hazy amber beer with a malt and biscuit aroma. Crisp malts with floral hops, but slightly cardboardy in aftertaste (oxidized). Medium body which complement the hops well.

Drake (13739) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 30, 2008
12 ounce bottle from Downtown Wine & Gourmet in Harrisonburg, VA, which had this bottled outdated by 15 months on the shelf. For shame! However, for a lager, this ages well. Pours a golden amber color with a thin, long lasting head. Grainy aroma with some fruity notes. Grain, caramel and bitter hop notes in the taste. Medium bodied.

Pours golden nut brown with orange hints and a thin off-white head. Sour malt aroma with a yeast nose. Hoppy flavor with sour malt end. Palate is medium-bodied, fizzy and very refreshing. Thanks to dirtymike for this one.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden amber with a medium large creamy beige head. Big lager grain aromas with a touch of citrus, surprising since this bottle has an expiration date of April ’09. Sweet, slightly tangy, and a little bit metallic. Odd… I’m fairly certain this was hiding (because I hunted around in the little hidden areas of the cooler where stray singles end up) in the cooler for the last however many months, so it should be preserved rather well, but it still has an odd tang like it went off somehow. Finishes with more grain, more faint metal, and a nice bitterness. Not a huge loss that it’s not being made again, but it’s drinkable at least.
