COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
If you’re not familiar with Scotch Ales as a beer style, they’re all about malt sweetness and smoke (at least in the US). This has lead to a common misconception that all ales brewed in Scotland fit this deScription, though a closer examination of brewing history shows that Scottish brewers have always brewed a range of styles, including IPA, as well as other lighter and more subtle styles. History is interesting, but some details will always be forgotten; as such, you’d be hard pressed to find a traditional American-style Scotch Ale that doesn’t use some portion of smoked malt.
Smuttynose Scotch Ale is still smoky, though we’ve substituted beechwood smoked malt for malt smoked with peat, the “traditional” American choice. The change results in a softer smoke character that we prefer.

Purchased from a local grocery store and no I will not mention which. BIG BEER Series (750 mL sized bottles) containing a rusty prune brown which when poured displayed a fruitfully bubbly, off-white head. Smells...well, ... Oh, I hate it when I can’t immediately detect precisely what I’m pinpointing in my nose. Heather? Bread yeast for definite. Woodsiness? Refined sugar? I’m having a real hard time honestly sniffing out its supposedly distinct ingredients. Tastes however much sweeter and altogether more unbalanced than I had thought. Firstly, its watery, with almost an unimaginable dullness that is only rescued by yeasts character, brief clove notes, Candi sugar (light) and smoke. Each sip taken is increasingly transported into a malt liquor rank hence the average-to-low rating, but this beer has class and class goes a long way.

Lilja (3140) - Malmö, SWEDEN - MAY 14, 2017
Flaska delad med Samuel214, tack! Bäst före-datum passerat med dryga 2,5 år. Brunmurken, smutsdisig med fingerhögt, gräddigt, beigevitt skum. Fadd, matt doft av fudge, karamell, farinsocker, mörk torkad frukt, smörkola, russin, gammal kartong, malt och lönnsirap. Mellanstor, len kropp. Ligger nära i smaken.

Clear copper pour with a beige cap of foam. Not much retention. Aroma is caramel, dough, crusty bread, some molasses. Very malty, sweet taste. Sticky mouthfeel. Big body and moderate carbonation.

Aroma is sweet and malty and lightly smokey. Taste is similar but the finish is like a fine sipping rum, which was unexpected. 2013 vintage on tap at the brewery.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from the brewery. Aroma is strong caramel and bread with lighter vanilla that you can smell from a mile away. Appearance is clear reddish amber with attractive sparkle and fleeting finger-width off-white head with trace lacing. Taste is moderately sweet rich caramel, earth, light alcohol. Palate is medium bodied with thick, creamy texture, average to soft carbonation and lightly sweet finish. Overall, I wish the taste had been as strong as the aroma. This certainly doesn’t fall prey to being overly sweet like some scotch ales, but I would have liked a bolder flavor.

(Bottle) Reddish amber colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with dried fruit (dates), caramel, chocolate, hazelnuts, blood orange, bread and gentle hints of smoke. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, liquorice, dried fruit, dates, brown sugar, hazelnuts, chocolate, orange peel, raspberries, gentle hints of smoke and a balanced spicy bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Bold chewy malt character and a gentle spicy bitterness. Excellent balance. Lovely beer.
