Hazy brown body with off whiye head when poured from my 12oz. bottle. The nose was balanced malts and hops, with yeast. Spices come out in the taste. Well done. StewardofGondor (2088) - Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 15, 2005
Semi-hazy bronze with a tiny, swirling, bubbly head. Aroma leads with fresh hops along with elements of cotton, dryer sheets and whole wheat bread playing a supporting role. Hops hit up front for flavor, then gently recede to a honeycomb sweetening. Very much in line with a scaled back version of Smuttynose’s IPA. Some accents of gingerale and bran flakes, wrapping up with a dash of salt or citric oranges. Dry and lively on the palate. A decent pale ale. Thanks to tpkenned for the Smuttynose connection! theacelatrain (262) - Washington DC, USA - JUL 12, 2005
Bottle. Pours hazy copper with little white head. Mostly hoppy flavors with some malts, but flavor doesn’t last too long, probably because of way too much carbonation - a harsh and distracting on the tongue. jon112981 (327) - Bristow, Virginia, USA - JUL 8, 2005
Bottle. A copper pour with a slight thin white head. Very hoppy but the hops fade fast. Very flavorful pale. 3daddict (139) - Portland, Maine, USA - JUL 7, 2005
Pours a golden reddish color with average head. Sweet yeast and hop aroma. Taste is a perfectly balanced mix of malts, hop and carbonation. Finishes clean and dry. Excellent Pale Ale.

Bottle: Spicy hop nose and a mild, nutty malt/caramel base, bready malt notes; sweet front end. slightly dry finish; not particularly flavorful; a fairly average pale, at best WesBeerGuy (62) - Rocky Hill, Connecticut, USA - JUL 3, 2005
Good color, not much nose to it. Good floral hops taste well balanced with sweeter malts. A really really well done pale ale. Very drinkable. jcwattsrugger (12549) - Florida and, New Jersey, USA - JUN 22, 2005
UPDATED: JUL 8, 2006 on tap- Pours a caramel head that hangs around well. Color is copper-amber. Taste is a bit on the sweet, fruity side, a little hoppy without the bitterness, nice. JensenTaster (1719) - DENMARK - JUN 15, 2005

(on bottle)NICE amber-brown colour, with a small tan head. The aroma is really plesant, lots of pear/apple and warm malts - caramel. Therefor the tart and harsh taste is a bit wild for this palat; the finish almost became metallic. cvillebeer (134) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - JUN 14, 2005
Of late I have been drinking lots of Smuttynose IPA, so I thought I’d try this to compare- I’ve had it many times but it’s been awhile.
The pour: coppery-amber with frothy head and lots of lacing.
The nose: nice blend of hops- no strong single hop character stands out (not screaming citrus or pine or grass) , but a nice balance. Maltiness and a subdued fruitiness from the yeast blend in as well.
The flavor: hoppy and malty up front, bitter with some caramel in the middle and a reasonably dry finish.
I prefer the more aggressive IPA, but then that’s a different style. A solid well made pale ale from one of my favorite breweries.
