Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! Theres no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; its pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. Weve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isnt too different from Old Brown Dog, but its a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

This was a really enjoyable beer, totally unique and unlike anything else Ive tried. It has a rich, chocolately, caramel aroma, with a medium roastiness. Upon sipping, it creates an almost paradoxical sensation, with the intense hoppiness of an IPA combined with a rich caramel depth, a bit of dark chocolate, and a sort of dry roastiness, only a moderate roast. The hops have a floral character and are really delightful. Each sip is exciting and this is one of those beers that is so intense that I cant drink it much faster than sipping it, but I also dont want to stop sipping it because the aroma and sensations on the palate are so enjoyable.

Bottle. Brown with some reddish tones with light brown head with god lacing. Tastes to some smoked malts but still being a fruity beer. Very recommendable.

On tap at Angels Trumpet Ale House, pours a hazy chestnut brown with a small beige head. Aroma broker out toasted nuts, bready malt and a hint of caramel. Flavour is robust, full of caramel, bready malt, toasted nuts and a dry malty finish. Well-balanced. Malt-heavy for the most part with just enough bitterness to dry this out. Very good.

(Bottle) Brown colour with frothy, beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, hoppy nose with dark fruit, coffee, dark rye bread, chocolate, treacle, citrus peel, some liquorice and hints of resin. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of dark fruit, crisp-bread, black coffee, liquorice, chocolate, caramel, grapefruit and a generous resiny/citric bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness, but overall fairly dry. Complex and tasty with a solid hop bitterness. Still in good balance. Very nice.

Deliciosa combinacin de las notas maltosas y a frutos secos de las brown ale con un lupulado potente, protagonizado por el simcoe en la nariz. Nueces, tofe y especias con un toque bien amargo, resinoso y presencia de alcohol
