22oz vintage 2007, purchased at the brewery on the Portsmouth beer week festival. Dark amber - brown color, with a small bubbly beige ring head, with a nice oxidized fruity toasted, caramelized, biscuity, wheat malty nose, with some toffee, barley sugar, faint fruitcake, subtle brandyish, sugar pie accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a warmth sweet fruity toasted, caramelized, biscuity, wheat, pale malty character with some mild oxidized, brandish, toffee, mild earthy flowery leafy, grassy, citrusy, teaish hop, subtle caramelized apple on a stick flavours, leading towards a warming brandy liquor, sweet fruity carameilzed, wheat, toasted maltiness, light lingering leafy, grassy hop bitternes finish. Bomber from Bierhalle Deconinck, vintage 2012 (the year of "bottle conditioning" apparently - at least a year is mentioned here, not a very common feature on American bottles). This was the first - at least commercially available - wheat wine, basically American wheat ale elevated to barleywine strength; I had probably no more than two or three other examples of this style (AleSmith’s Decadence springs to mind). Off-white foam dissolving rapidly in the middle but initially retaining as a closed ring of ’mousse’ - which vanishes in the very end as well; initially clear, warm en deep, very pure, coppery amber robe, turning into a cloudy brownish amber with sediment, including some bits of dark, dead yeast at the bottom. Quite strong, but very obviously ’old’ aroma of biscuit, old apple cake, old sweet sherry (clear oxidation), baked banana, dried orange peel, artisanal honey, very old dried tarragon, old toast, rusty iron (clear oxidation!), pineapple, dough, bourbon, varnish. Candied and honeyish sweet onset, marmelade, yellow raisin and some candied fig here and there, some underlying but very ’dim’ cranberry sourishness, soft carbo, very vinous, oily mouthfeel, made more slick and even slightly soapy by the wheat, which manifests itself as a light bready accent flavor-wise on top of a caramelly malt sweet body, put to the front row. This slick and smooth, full maltiness dominates the finish along with a dash of leafy hops not providing any actual bitterness - as would be the case in an American style wheat ale of average strength - before a strong, even astringent, bourbon-like alcohol effect shows up; this alcohol burns a bit at first, even unpleasantly so, but becomes softer as more of the bottle is emptied. A bit too boozy for my personal taste, this would have been better if the alcohol were better hidden and would have given less ’wryness’ in the back of the mouth and throat; oxidation is very obvious too, both in a ’rusty’ and ’old cooked chicken’ kind of way (oxidized proteins) and in a much more elegant, sherry-like way. I do prefer my barley wines - and therefore wheat wines, I suppose - at a certain age of one or two years, but near to five years is apparently a bit much for this one. Other than the advanced oxidation and the overt ’booziness’, I do appreciate the slickness and sweetness of this, though admittedly I expected something more. Still, this is a very interesting archetype of a style that probably needs more exposure and finetuning. Barleywine-like, with lots of raisins and a smoother,silkier body probably thanks to the wheat.Noticeable non USAish hops. Alcohol present too, but nice, providing a warming feeling. Double digit ABv and it is recognizable from the first taste. Sweet beginning to end with no bitter at all. A decent brew...just not my favorite.

Couleur : ambrée-orangée.
Apparence : légèrement voilée.
Caramel toffee, légèrement fruité (fruits foncés), léger de céréales grillées, léger houblon herbeux aux notes épicées et résineuses.
En entrée de bouche : Léger goût fruité (fruits foncés, notes de petits fruits rouges) avec quelques notes épicées.
Une dominante de caramel aux notes rôties est présente avec un léger goût d’alcool réchauffant ainsi qu’une légère-moyenne amertume de houblon herbeux aux notes résineuses et terreuses.
En bouche :
Corps : moyen-rond.
Effervescence : douce-moyenne.
Texture : huileuse.
Finale : moyenne-longue, composée d’un résiduel sucré avec une légère amertume d’alcool, de houblon herbeux aux notes épicées.

2014 bottle. This is one big, boozy, beautiful beast of a beer. The color is a gorgeous ruby-red and it’s clear and a little oily-slick. The flavor and aroma is malty and complex -- caramel, stone fruits, a bit of spiciness. Great beer.
