Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful, fruity nose.
This relatively new sub-style combines Belgian, American and English influences to create a beer whose total is more than equal to the sum of its parts. Heres how Zinneke breaks down and adds back up. Start with a strong stout. This is the Big Beer Series after all then Belgianize it by altering the grain bill and fermenting the wort with a Trappist yeast strain. We backed off the heavy caramel and roasted malts to create a more complimentary flavor profile for the yeast, which contributes fruity esters and a light body. These parts combine to create a beer with dark color and light body with prevalent flavors of dark fruits, vanilla and toffee, while subtle chocolate flavors appear in the finish.

An interesting scent. I picked up on dark fruit, roasted malts, wood, vanilla, sweet bourbon, and chocolate. As for taste, the yeast and charred wood stands out. The malts follow those notes and a slight bourbon flavor with a very minimal sweetness appears. The sweetness could be caramel, fruit, or sugar. Either way it barely shows up and sticks around. The finish leaves a malty taste in my mouth which isnt bad. There is a low to a medium bitterness in this drink. Overall the Zinneke is not a home run but it is enjoyable.

Dark brown with beige head. Aroma roasted malt, mocha. Medium full body, small alcohol presence. Flavors toasty malt, caramel sweetness, touch of wood and dark fruits. Nothing particularly wrong, not great.

Hot grape and prune aroma, weak. Mahogany, medium tan head. Roasty coffee and dark chocolate flavor with plum accents. Bread toast present. Medium body with a coffee finish. Not very sweet, no candi at all, probably overly toasty for the style. A very American take on a Belgian style ale, but delightfully so.

Bottle shared by b3shine. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, caramel and vanilla wood alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy sweet roasted malt flavor with a medium to heavy sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a solid beer.

Bomber from Market Square. Black pour with a finger or so tan head and good retention. Aroma is molasses, chocolate, dark fruit, belgian spices. Tastes are malty, lots of wood, little bourbon, raisins, chocolate, yeasty, charred. Spicy finish. Nice sharp thin to medium texture. Interesting sipper.

The aroma is chocolate, fruity, molasses, licorice. the appearance is deep black, tan head. The flavor is chocolate, sweet fruit, molasses. The finish is sweet, boozy, pine needles. Medium/thick in body. Nicely done. Hard to pick up any belgian yeast though.

22oz bottle, from my local Kroger. Bottled in 2012. Dark clear brown color. Little brown head. Little lace. Bigger body, dry texture. Soft carbonation. Roasty spicy chocolatey flavor. Sweet taste. Some bitter, mostly just spicy. Not a huge fan of belgian-style stouts, but this one is alright. Hard for me to see why its necessary to spice up a stout, though. Initially its tasty, but quickly loses its luster, spice takes a toll. Good one to have shared 3 ways

Location: Bottle I brought to Pauls Blind Impy Stout Tasting, 1/5/13

Aroma: Nose of chocolate malts, vanilla, and roast, with hints of Belgian yeast and bourbon
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a small tan head
Flavor: It has lots of chocolate/malts, with the yeasty and bourbon flavors noticeable, but subtle
Palate: The body was a little lighter then I expected, it feels creamy and smooth
Overall Impression: Randomly, this was the first thing I drank blind out of all the beers there. Anyway, I was plenty happy to start with this one, as I thought it was quite good. A nice job by Smutty.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma has some dark fruit and licorice...a bit of a Sharpie note. Flavor follows suit and adds a touch of smoke and booze. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is fruity with a smokey/Sharpie note,
