COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named in honor of the doggy denizens of Brussels, this hybrid beer is a mix of what we love best in a big, roasty stout, but fermented with a Belgian yeast, which brings out a beautiful, fruity nose.
This relatively new sub-style combines Belgian, American and English influences to create a beer whose total is more than equal to the sum of its parts. Here’s how Zinneke breaks down and adds back up. Start with a strong stout. This is the Big Beer Series after all… then “Belgianize” it by altering the grain bill and fermenting the wort with a Trappist yeast strain. We backed off the heavy caramel and roasted malts to create a more complimentary flavor profile for the yeast, which contributes fruity esters and a light body. These parts combine to create a beer with dark color and light body with prevalent flavors of dark fruits, vanilla and toffee, while subtle chocolate flavors appear in the finish.

Bottle, 650ml. A dark beer with minimal brown head. Aroma is of dried fruits and alcohol. Taste is moderately bitter with an aftertaste of dried fruits, especially raisins. Light bodied for an Imperial Stout with considerable carbonation. Somewhat alcoholic finish.

I think I get what they’re aiming for but this comes off more like "stout light" than "Belgianized". A little fruitier than a typical stout but lacks complexity and subtleties that would be found in a fine Belgian.

Draft at Hayseed. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Leaves trace lacing in the glass. Fairly fruity on the nose. Interesting mix of roasted malt and Belgian yeast notes on the tongue. Finished clean. This vintage was from a 2012 keg so the flavors may have deepened as opposed to a fresh keg. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Brought this bottle that I aged 13 months to the In-laws to share. They made the Easter dinner for us. Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, tan head. The aroma is a collection of chocolate, plums, figs, vanilla, brown sugar, toasted bread and roasted nuts. Full-bodied and oily with modest carbonation. The flavor is nicely balanced – roasty, toasty and loaded with dark chocolate, figs and dates. Lightly bitter finish.
