Neat dubbelbok. Definitely not very sweet. Well-balanced. Caramel, bitter chocolate. Gangstergafje (1343) - Capelle aan den IJssel, NETHERLANDS - NOV 1, 2017
01-11-2017; bottle; at home (bought at Plus supermarket 's Gravenland).
The looks of the beer are nice. It has a rich look. The beer is nice and dark. It glows lovely. The color of the beer is a beautiful ruby red. On top of the beer a nice soft layer of almond coloured foam is formed. Foam retention is average. A thin drape and some lacing is left.
The smell of the beer is nice. There are some nice warming aromas. I smell sweet malts, caramel, syrup, candy sugar and warming alcohol. The hops give a tiny bitter touch to it, but it is mainly warm and malty.
The taste of the beer is nice. Full rich maltiness, caramel, candy sugar, some liquorice and syrup. Hops give some nice bitters to it. There is also a nice woody touch to the beer. I like it. The alcohol is very warming. I love it. It seems a bit more concentrated than regular Doppelbock, thanks to the freezing technique.
The palate of the beer is nice. Medium full body, smooth and warming alcohol. The carbonation is average. The finish is not to long. It has a lot of alcohol, some bitter hops and a bitter slightly burnt caramel touch. The taste is better than the finish. But, all in all, a very nice beer. I like it. Good one, good first Eisbock. UPDATED: SEP 1, 2017 330ml bottle. Opaque, darkest brown colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, fairly lasting an dlacing, beige head. Dark malty aroma, hints of malt lozenge and chocolate, herbal hoppy overtones with a touch of woodruff and eucalyptus, whiffs of coffee in between. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, slightly sweet, hints of cola, malt lozenge, a touch of treacle and dark chocolate, moderately bitter hoppy counterweight with a herbal touch, hints of woodruff and eucalyptus. Very good controlled sweetness, dangerously drinkable - really nice. prof222772 (22) - North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - MAR 14, 2017
Appearance: dark brown, nice lacing head. Aroma: wood, caramel, coffee. Taste: medium sweat, medium bitter. Burning alcohol sensation, long harsh bitter finish. Didn’t like it... tomer (3845) - Rishon Le Zion, ISRAEL - JAN 23, 2017
At a tasting, thanks, small stable creamy head, cloudy dark red color, aroma of caramel, nut and rum with a bready backbone, caramel dark bread, butterscotch, rum flavor, smooth, medium bodied. Enjoyable and true to the style but not overly exciting.
