Only the beers from the city of Köln, Germany are allowed to be called Kölsch. While most German beers are lagers, Kölsch is one of the few German ales. This beer is light in color and quenching, very mild in hop character. This is a signature beer of Chris Erickson. The recipe was written after returning from a trip overseas visiting our German brewer friend Guido Waldecker and is named in his honor. Guido’s Kölnerbrau has an alcohol content of 4.9%.

On tap at Bier:Thirty. What a great version of the style. Pale golden with thin, soft head. Nice grainy aroma whicjlh follows through to a crisp, clean taste. Slick, thick body to boot. Prost!

It poured a clear straw gold with a small head of foam. The smell had a good sweet malty nose balanced with a light hoppiness from some citrus. The taste had light caramel sweetness, light citrus hops and finished with a dash of bread. Nicely balanced and very nice tasting. It had a medium mouthfeel with fairly light carbonation. Drinkability? This was way easy to drink due to the overall balance and not being afraid to bring out the flavours. I’d like to see more brews of this style around my neck of the woods!

On draught at the brewpub. Arrived a clear gold with a moderate white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left partial lace. Mild aroma of malt and bread with a few notes of citrus. The flavor is malt and bread but more distinct than the aroma, followed by mild bitterness. Smooth on the palate. Very good Kolsch.

Gold pour, white head. Boring lagerish and malty notes in the nose. Plain and boring, very malty. Nothing very exciting at all, but nothing overly offensive either.

Draft at the brewpub. Golden and clear, as you’d expect. Super malty, making this a "close but not quite" interpretation of the Kolsch style. IMHO it’s just a bit too "lagery" on the malt, but not bad. (#4636, 7/1/2012)
