The Apprentice isnt quite as juicy and candy-like as The Pupil, but youre really splitting hairs when you need to make observations like that. The fact is, this is another outstanding IPA from a brewery that clearly knows how to make one. Light amber color - excellent head retention; a layer of foam stayed on this beer all the way to the end. Theres a lovely mix citrusy, zesty fruit presented on the nose and palate. Grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, lemon, and lime. Oily and somewhat creamy feel. Ill really need to pay a visit to Societe the next time Im in SD.

Type: 6-oz. draft Glass: Tall, clear, slender glass From: Societe Brewing in San Diego, Calif. Price: $3 Purchased: Nov. 3, 2016 Consumed: Nov. 3, 2016 Reviewed as: American IPA Misc.: N/A Not a huge fan of Societe and really think they are very overrated overall, but I still snuck over after picking up something for work nearby. I had tried The Apprentice before, giving it a 3.50 on Untappd, but admittedly saying that I was sick with a cold. Time to give this one another chance. Poured a medium yellow clear color with two fingers of frothy white head when I got it. A few bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent uneven foamy lacing. Very good lacing. (Sight - 4.25) First thing I thought on the smell was dry-hopped. Also got pine, citrus, resin, lemon, a grapefruit punch, Citra, maybe Cascade, floral late, lime and dish soap. (Smell - 3.75) Tasted better than the nose with resin, wet sappy pine, hints of Nugget, floral, Citra, earthy grapefruit peel, lime, lemon, dish soap and some spiciness, maybe Simcoe? Definitely dry-hopped. Pretty boozy as well, tasting stronger than 7.2 pct. ABV. (Taste - 3.75) Light body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, boozy bitter finish. (Feel - 3.50) This was better than the last time I tried it, but still not that great. A bit too bitter and boozy, especially for 7.2 pct. ABV. Would like more balance. (Overall - 3.75) 3.76 85 B+

On tap at Hops & Pie. Zesty, floral and herbal hops on the nose. Similar flavor, adding medium to heavy hop bitterness and minimal malt sweetness. Medium body with a crisp, clean feel and a lingering bitter finish. Pretty tasty overall.

Hazy golden under a thin foamy white head. Thick bready but citrus-piney hop aroma with a wee touch of funky sweetness. Smooth body and a leafy hop flavored palate, lights biscuitiness, medium and balanced bitterness throughout, and a leafy slightly piney smooth finish with a fluffy yeast body.

Heard great thing about the brewery. Unable to make it out but had at the lions share.

Tap at Fish House Encinitas. Dank, medium sweetness, soapy, tangerine, oily resinous, super well-balanced. Really, really, really good.

Draft at Toronado SD. The Apprentice, huh? Trump reference? Will they make IPA great again after all their other good IPAs? Lets see. Slightly hazy golden pour with a small white head but good lacing. Aroma is hoppy - whod have thought - with orange, grapefruit, and some slight dank/herbal notes. Flavor is more balanced with a touch of sweet malt then a citrus rind and stone fruit hop punch. Medium bodied with a good resinous feel. Nice but The Pupil had a slightly better brutality to it.

Tap at City Beer. Bright straw gold with some hazy and a lacy head with legs. Dry citrus nose, straw, light malt. Nice bit of sweetness, good malt flavor, lovely fruit. Rounded, peaches, oranges, some tropical fruit. Dry finish.

On tap @ the brewery. Slightly hazy yellow body, lasting white head. Very fragrant fresh tropicl fruit hop character (noticably different profile from the session IPA), pineapple and mango, some graperfuit. Slightly sweet pale malt base, long bitter finish. The kind of IPA I could drink all night.
