3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at the brewery. Pours hazy golden with a creamy off-white head that leaves webs of lacing down the glass. Nice chocolate and coffee roast flavors are potent on mild rich weizen body. Nice light bitterness in the finish.
On tap at the source... Pours a hazy vivid brighter yellow hue, a touch moreso than yarn and topped with a thin soapy white head... Aroma of citrus banana and hefe yeast, yeast more abundant here than yarn. Some more footy accents and grapefruit rind. Lacking any chocolate for sure... Flavors are semi-bitter citrus notes and here yeast, slightly spicy profile to it. Medium bodied with a lasting rind bitterness in the backend and finish. Lacking those cocoa nibs but more enjoyed as a hoppy wheat than yarn. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - OCT 31, 2012
On tap at the brewery. Pours a cloudy, orange-gold colored body with a finger-width, dense, creamy and frothy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is big cocoa nibs up front before the base starts to come through. Mild citruses, light clove notes, touches of bready wheat, banana, and earth. A few florals remain with some fruity esters coming through as well. Flavor is similar. Some citruses and a few florals up front before lots of cocoa nibs come in. Banana in the middle with a light clove, somewhat grainy and bready wheats, and some fruity esters. Finishes mostly dry, earthy, and moderately bitter with a good amount of cocoa nibs and a few citruses. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, I didn’t love this, but I thought it was a cool take on the original. The cocoa nibs definitely muted the flavors, but the base was clearly present. Not bad. Draft pour on tap at the brewery (Naperville, IL). Pours a well hazed yellow pour, thicker haziness overally and big frothy whitish head atop. Laces well, sticks around as a good layer. Aromas are distinct cacao, a bit roasty, some clove, fruity esters, bready malts, and a mellow touch of dry bitter hops. Warming a bit makes the cocoa element even more dominant, overrunning much else. Initial is medium bodied, a bit lighter with cocoa and earth up front, a bit of coffee, moving into flaked wheat and fruity ester touches. Lemon, decent bittering hops and florals as we get further in. Cocoa grows, remains more dominant into the backend and full on the palate. Some gentle hops, touches of citrus, mellow dryness. Hops give a bit of life at times but at others the cocoa completely dominates it. Not something I’d drink much of. Headbanger (4021) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - AUG 9, 2012
4oz draft at brewery Pours a murky yellowish orange with a decent little white head. Aroma of cocoa. Taste of chocolate, banana, clove, and some hops. This medium bodied brew is a nice change. Good brew.
