GoufCustom (2258) - HONG KONG - AUG 23, 2017

330 ml bottle bought at Soni Kohgen’s booth during HKTDC Food Expo 2017 in HKCEC, Wanchai.

Cloudy hazy straw golden colour with a fine mist of yeast particlesThree-quater finger head with soapy white foam which lasted for 1 minute; Fair sticky lacing with zero carbonation; Sweet aroma of bready malt, with light chemical, floral, light sugar, strong dough, thin lemon and light grass; Medium sweet taste of bready malt, with grains, floral, sugar, strong dough, lemon, fair bitter hops and grass; Close to light body. Slick palate; Mouth feel is good Pils maltyness in a slightly thin background. Grainy and sweet (inoffensive), flowery and doughty with fairly strong lemon hoppiness to round. So so... Hoppiness is floral, thin lemon and light grass in nose, same in taste but stronger; Bitterness is fairly strong for an abrupt, mid astringent sweet-bitter malty finish; Quite dry after taste. Doughty, fairly bitter to mouth.

Comments: I’ve had a number of Japanese Pils from craft brewers, and this one seems to be quite unrefined in many ways, from the yeasty look, sweet nose, to rough, watery doughty maltyness, and a lack of carbo and fine hoppiness rendered this one more like a home brew than a real Pils. It’s drinkable but inferior, considering the price.

Clear yellow with no real head. Aroma of wet maybe musty hops and dried leaves. Taste is quite sour with normal harsh hoppy bitterness. Not particularly smooth, but good to drink in quantities. Could be more refreshing though.

Bottle at Kaeru. Wheaty aroma, bit of sweetness. Taste is ok, light grassy hops, bit of grain, some sweetness. not so exiting.

maekchu (4104) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAY 27, 2014
Draught at Craft Beer Live 2014. Mild grassy nose, hay and raked-up pile of leaves. Very light straw, 1-cm. creamy white head, good lace. Terrible chemical artificial malt initial, upper-palate cloying sweetness, rude rotten fruit, almost no bittering. Like strange candy water.

Part of the 1212 yen trail set for new customers direct from the brewery via their Rakuten page. I’m happy they switched labels the bottles look much better than the photo online. They need to update their webpage. After having their kolsch I was curious to try their lager side by side to compare. Colorwise they’re virtually identical with the pilsner being maybe a smidge darker but that could just be the lighting. The aroma is strange for a lager, a kind of fruity candy caramel-buttery? The taste is fruity at first then it mellows into more of a typical lager with light malts, and bitter grass in the dry finish. The kolsch is my favorite of the two, judging by that kind of indeterminate fruitiness I’m hard pressed believing it is a lager yeast as it should be for a pilsner. I can see what KyotoLefty meant about bananas... not at all to style.

Bottle at Yuzan Guesthouse, Nara - shared with Mette. Clear yellow - white head. Bread, white bread, light sourish, light buttery, messy, light citrus, milk, sour milk aroma, herbal hoppy notes, not clean and perfect - ok try....

Bottle from the brewery. Clear bight golden color with a medium head. Fragrant, buttery, yeasty aroma, quite sweet and a bit fruity. Bananas. Fruity, full round flavor, lots of yeast and butter. Rich malt. Relatively sweet, though hops are evident and become more so towards the finish. Slightly similar flavor profile to the Koelsch, though hoppier and a bit cleaner. Basically in the Bohemian style, I suppose. Full flavor, medium body, with just stronger than medium bitterness. Finish lightly bitter, fragrant, mellow. As with the koelsch, I’m not sure if this is really how the style should taste, but I like it quite a bit.
