Bottle, aged sample. Clear copper color. Aroma is caramel malts, faint papery notes of oxidation. Flavor matches. Sort of light in body for the style, and still a bit hot despite the time in the bottle. Hurt by a bit of a papery note. This did not stand up well to aging, which is a bit of a disappointment in a barleywine, but it was just a bit too light for that treatment in my opinion.

355mL. Clear amber, low carbonation with no head. Nose is maple, peanut brittle, toffee, mint, lemon iced tea. Taste is lemon, coffee, dusty, paper. Neutral sugar, tannic. Not my style.

Orange-amber with a white head. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel and pine. Flavor is brown sugar, maple, pine and a light amount of tartness. I also get some alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

12 oz bottle from bhensonb (maybe a 2004 since that is what he rated and because of the general characteristics of the beer?) Nose is light toffee, prunes, and an overall oxidized aroma. Murky lighter brown with a very slight bit of carbonation. Flavor is somewhat oxidized, toffee, and a bit of candi sugar. Body is somewhat watery. To be savored like a fine cognac?

An average BW at best. To be fair I am not sure of the vintage I ran across, it is possible that it was an older vintage and this is a BW that doesnt stand the test of time well. I didnt find it to be particularly well balance. No boosiness, the odor seemed muted and a bit musty, malty, a touch of dark fruits on the nose. The color and carbonation were proper. I would like to give this brew another shot, if I knew what vintage I had so I could make a fairer assessment. I wouldnt seek this beer out again, but if I were to run across it, it was reasonably priced and I would give it another try. Not a drain pour by any means, but the one I had was nothing special either.

5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - MAY 15, 2011
Bottle: 1999 vintage from brewandbbq. Intense deep caramel, minimal sudsy head, dies on the spot, no lacing. Pretty much what I expected. Strong musty caramel nose... oh, and HUGE oxidation. Surprisingly caramel sweet, brown sugar, very musty and basement like on the tongue. Despite the oxidation, its not half bad. Sweetness dies quickly. Not much body is left on this one. Lingering caramel sweetness, strong but dull in flavor. Otherwise strong and dank basement mustiness. Held up fairly well for 12 years despite the oxidation.

Bottle. Pours an amber toned body with an off whtie head. Herbal hopped body light pine, herbal, and a plant tone im unfamiliar with. Lighter fruit note s citrus and peach. A bit warming with tart finish. Odd ball.
