3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml corked and caged...Pours a deep ruddy ruby hue. Steady carbonation, mostly lasting, creamy beige head, sticky lacing. Earthy, dark fruit, rusty nose. Solid malts, toffee, dark dried fruit, leather, floral notes. Light to medium bodied, silky smooth, earthy through the finish. Nice...

This one pours from 750ml bottle(room temp) a clear amber with a huge head of foam that shrinks slowly to a solid layer with tons of lacing. A beautiful Ale to look at! Oh, btw, the cork was a bit difficult to get out but when it did, it exploded out of the bottle and hit my ceiling.
The smell is very malty but I also note a fruity nose, mainly dark fruit, some alcohol, and it has a roastiness to it.
The taste has a ton of caramel malt up front but it's done well because it isn't overly sweet. I'm getting a lot of flavours here..plum, roasted malt, a nuttiness, molasses, candy sugar, toffee, man, this is so complex and so interesting, I find it hard to describe all that is going on here. There is also a hop bitterness in the background; I guess that's how the sweetness is being controlled so well, eh? ;^)
Further sips in and I'm getting a nice warming from the alcohol content but heck, it's anything but harsh. What a smooth sipper and that makes for an Old Ale that has excellent drinkability!!
Bottom line: Yet another brew from Southampton that is a real gem. My sincerest thanks go out to Nutbrown for this sample and *all* the samples I got in trade. What a wonderful brewery...I couldn't recommend them enough! marcus (10584) - Sacramento, California, USA - AUG 25, 2014
Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours medium brown with a transient beige head and a marvelous treacle aroma. There is a very mellow dark molasses flavor that starts light then gets heavy on the palate. A bit of dark fruit, lots of treacle and that classic aged taste. A real treat. bhensonb (15624) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 25, 2014
750 c&c from Bu11zeye. Pours hazy cola brown. Aroma of very light oxidation and treacle. Flavor is very treacle, very light oxidation. Gets mildly medium dark fruity. A well aged botlle. Delicious. oRos (1675) - sacramento, California, USA - AUG 25, 2014

pours a clear amber/ruby color with a medium whikte head. aroma is loaded with fig and raisin...sweet. flavor follows suit...fresh figgy notes...a bit one dimensional. mouthfeel is medium/full with a figgy finish that actually isnt as sweet as the up front flavors.

750 ml cork and caged bottle that I’ve been sitting on for several years broke out during the willblake’s in NJ tasting. Poured a deep red/brown body with an average to smaller foamy beige head. Aroma had a slight touch of oxidation sneaking in, lots of caramel and vanilla, toffee, slight cardboard gameboard, raisin and date bread. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a lingering flavor that finishes with strong carbonation. Flavor of raisin and date bread, toffee, caramel, molasses, and a touch of vanilla. Really impressed how nicely this one held up, except for slight oxidation on the nose this was superb. jtclockwork (17101) - , New Jersey, USA - MAR 19, 2012
Bottle shared by Dmac. Pours caramel brown with off white head. Nose/taste of prune cake, dark fruits, toffee, caramel, baked bread and buttered biscuit. Ever so slight oxidation doesn’t detract. It’s still drinking very well but I probably wouldn’t hold on to it much longer. Medium body. cpetrone84 (1810) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 22, 2011
Pours a nice transparent red with a thin tan head. The nose is of sweet red apple skins with a nice light tartness. Toasted grains play in as well with a hint of a rye like spice. Incredible nose, extremely well integrated and robust. The flavor is great, not quite as bright as the nose. Tart red apple skins with a touch of sweet sugary caramel. Toasted grains and that same spicy rye note with a touch of oxidation that adds depth rather than detracts from flavor. Thick full body with an effervescent feel from assertive carbonation. Fantastic stuff! GT (10002) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 11, 2011
750mL thanks to glouglouburp. The pour is a muddy mahogany with a large, suddy yellow head. Good lace. Nose is raisin, toffee, must/cellar notes, black cherries, De Dolle Oerbier yeast. Lemon, fresh funkiness, Belgian yeast notes. Taste is awesome- somewhere between De Dolle Oerbier and Abbaye De Rocs Quadrupel with a rich, chocolatey dessert profile. Figs, dates, black cherry reminding me a lot of Westvleteren 8 with its muted booziness, spice, and ultra rich palate. Huge creaminess. Very Trappist in profile. Incredible stuff. /11/11/12//12
