On draft @ Capones with Mad_indian. Pours dark with a small off-white head. Aroma of roast, earth, and sligth chocolate. The flavor is roasted, earth, slight chocolate, and watery. Thin bodied, less watery and more malts needed.
Poured into a mug, the appearance was a black color with a thick two fingers foamy off white head. Slow dissipation causes some messy clingy lace.
The aroma had some cocoa power, sweet dark malts, and mild ash.
The flavor leaned towards the sweetness of the cocoa powder. Ashy dryness comes in acceptable sort of way. Mild ashy to cocoa powdery sort of aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Good carbonation. ABV felt right. Some chalkiness in the feel.
Overall, pretty good Irish dry stout. I didn’t mind that ashiness in it, but perhaps a bit different. willblake (2654) - Bel Air, Maryland, USA - DEC 7, 2008
20080613 Tap at Capones. Overall disappointing offering from SH, but only because it is a mostly typical brewpub type Irish stout. Could be drier and would appreciate a light acidity. This one was pretty sweet across the middle but eventually showed some ashy, cocoa maltiness. 4 oz. sample, on tap at the brewpub. Consumed on 7-31-08. I’m pretty sure this was nitrogenated. Dark brown with creamy taupe head. Looks like root beer. Nice lacing. Coffee with cream, sugar, and hazelnut in the aroma. Taste is sweet with coffee-bitter finish. Milk chocolate and mocha flavors. Lightly bitter aftertaste. Light body. Typically under-"carbonated." Tap @ Blind Tiger. Pours as you would expect - deep brown to black with a cream-colored head. Aroma is enticing, with slight roasted malt and barely-detectable coffee. Taste is the same - the beer remains smooth throughout even though it’s not very complex and the flavors are not as strong as they otherwise could be. Just solid, nothing more. On (nitro) tap at SPH. Pours black with an inch thick light tan head that of course persists. Aroma mostly of coffee and roasted malt, some light chocolate in there. Flavor of the same sweet roasted malt, some bitter hops. Weak palate, not very flavorful. Ugh, didn’t really care for this and I think the nitro made it worse.

On tap (nitro) at the Publick House. Standard nitro appearance. Very restrained, mellow coffee aroma. Pretty much that’s all there is in the flavor as well. Weak, watery, almost laughable body. Tap at Capones for the SH promo. Pours a nice deep dark black but also has some ruby hints up to the light and a thin nitro head. Aroma is a bit weak, hindered by the nitro, lgith toffee, coffee and cream, light roast, and some nutty chocolate hints. Flavor is a bit weak as well despite its big 5.5% for the style. Nutty dry dark chocolate, doughy, slight yeast, cocoa powder, cocoa nibs, earth, and leather. Finish is dry and a bit weak. Ok overall, but I wouldnt drink this again. Nearly opaque dark brown pour with a small tan head. Some aroma notes of coca and a mild roastiness. Medium roasted flavors with a touch of sweet vanilla. Low to moderate carbonation. Decent take on an irish dry stout.
