Our Southampton Saison is a faithful rendition of this classic "farmhouse" style ale. Originally brewed for consumption during the summer months, its slight tartness and intense fruitness make it a most refreshing drink anytime of year.

Bottle generously donated to our bathtub soiree, GABF 2007. 2005 vintage. Big foamy fluffy head is white and sits above a hazy orange beer. Smell is lively with light yeast effervescence; you can feel the carbon dioxide being released into your nose. White pepper at first and a little lambic-ish acidity from the yeast. Middle is citric melon with darker yeasty qualities, finishing into a light honeydew, dry white pepper, cardamom, and other dry spices. Very nice texture, and a nice balance of the citric fruity aspects and the yeasty, spicy ones: the yeastiness doesn’t swallow the freshness, but it isn’t full-juicy and has a nice sophistication. Nice beer.

750 ML Bottle at the SPH Brewpub. Drank in 2005. Pour was cloudy dark brown with an average head, white. Aroma is that of spices, and fruit, very reminiscent of autumn, but not quite that of a harvest ale. Taste is the same, and very smooth indeed!

In short: A crisp and classic American take on the Saison style. Excellent.
How: (backlog) A few times at tasting sessions
The look: cloudy golden body with a medium white head.
In long: Spices and dried citrus fruits on the nose. Rather yeasty, crisp and a bit citric with some dry grass, orange zest and a little spicy touch. Pleasant tartness/acidity, just light enough to be refreshing without being aggressive. Lively carbonation. Skimpy notes but twice I had the opportunity to have this regular Saison and its Deluxe replacement in the same tasting session and both times I found the regular Saison far superior and truer to the style. Why Southampton replaced this excellent Saison with the very good but inferior Deluxe is to me as much as a mystery as why dont sheeps shrink when it rains.

2005 bottle corked and caged poured a very hazy caramel brown in color with a two finger head on the initial pour melting back to become a thin layer of white foam. aroma is light with yeast, fruit, light spice, and apple peels. mouth feel is medium light with decent carbination. flavor has yeasty bread notes, spice, some straw, and does have a mineral like taste. not sure if this aged so well, has some funky bitterness at the end. the style of beer that is usually in my book better fresh and crisp but i came across it and thought i would give it a try.

Bright yellow. White airy head. Nice fruity aroma. Medium body. Stinging taste on the tongue. Not smooth, harsh. Creamy and fills the mouth.

750 ml bottle thanks to boboski. Nice earthy aromas. Some spice in there when you take a nice long sniff. Similar flavor with some citrus-like fruit in between. Excellent

UPDATED: MAY 28, 2009 Tap @ Blind Tiger. Pours a straw-gold color with a quickly-dissipating head. Aroma is light fruit, yeast, grassy hops. Taste is heavy Belgian yeast up front, dissolving into fruit and a sharp pepper aftertaste. The beer was very smooth, though it might be nearing the end of the line (especially considering it wasnt aged in a bottle). Overall, I liked.

Bottle pours a lightly hazy golden. Soft light malt aroma. Very light spiciness. Warm malty pale flavor. Butttery and smooth. Subtle and pleasant. Terrific example of a style that is not my fav. Thanks Chad.
