You hold in your hand a stout for stout lovers. Buried Hatchet is brewed with a large quantity of brown malt reminiscent of a traditional pre-Industrial Revolution malt profile. This stout is full of robust, roasted flavors which intermingle with a bittersweet creaminess that concludes to a perfect, warming finish.

This was the Nitro version, which really made it good. Roasted malt, coffee and some sweetness on the nose. Very dark with light creamy head. Very creamy and heavy. Low carbonation, which was expected. This added to the smooth character. High roasted malts, coffee, almost burnt but not in a bad way. I liked this better than the canned version. It also hid the alcohol better.

Ar: Wet malt and sherry--oxidation; cocoa powder, dark caramel. Ap: Black and opaque; very large tan head with good retention, leaves a ring of fine lacing sticking to the glass sides and a cap of dense foam. T: Cocoa and cherries; sharp, slightly tannic; cocoa and dark caramel; some treacle; sherry-like oxidation, with some sharp caramels. P: Medium-full body with high carbonation; finish is medium. O: This beer has some nice elements, but its muddled and suffers from some oxidation and sharpness.

On tap at Bangers, Austin. Excellent example of the style, smooth with complex roasted flavours and minimal acrid bitterness.

Keg at Yard House, Houston. It pours dark brown with a medium tan head. The aroma is rich, earthy roast, loads of coffee grounds, toasted brown bread and bit of meatiness almost. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, charred wood, filter coffee, coffee cake, toasted nut, wood and some alcohol through the finish. Medium - full body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Not a huge amount of depth to it, but enjoyable enough.

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2016 Dark brown pour, fair sized head, livelier carbonation. Sweet Dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, black coffee dominate the aroma and taste with a healthy blast of bitter hops. Caramel and nuts in the aftertaste. Surprisingly thinner body. Drinks like a coffee infused black IPA (say, whatever happened to Black IPA anyways?)

Dark dark dark with a thin light beige head. Bitter coffee aroma, some earthiness. A very slick mouthfeel...coffee, cocoa powder, dark cherry notes. Pretty good.

12 ounce can - $3.49 at Total Wine & More in Greenville, South Carolina. Appearance: Dispensed a deep, black body with half an inch of mocha-toned foam. Smell: Boldly chocolaty aromatics atop a blunted roasted character with touches of scorched heavy cream, candied caramels, molasses and a vein of dark fruitiness. Taste: As with the aroma, very heavy and forward on the chocolate backed by a decided creaminess. Fairly sweet akin to melty ice cream. A little touch of dark fruitiness within. A roastiness is present but rather restrained. Warming alcohol. Lightly roasty, heavily chocolaty finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Charmingly smooth mouthfeel. Overall: Terrifically wonderful.
