growler thanks to hudsonphotog. poured a deep brown with ruby highlights, and a cream head. chocolate, beef, roasted malts, and syrup. thick palate, roasted chocolate, smoke is definitely there, and a chewy finish. Mora2000 (6158) - McKinney, Texas, USA - NOV 2, 2010
Thanks to hudsonphotog for sharing this growler.
The beer pours a black color with a tan head. The aroma is chocolate, roasted malt and some smoke. The flavor is more of the same. I get some chocolate, roasted malt and a tad bit of smoke. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
This is a standard porter with a little bit of smoke added, not a smoked beer with a little porter.
Very nice. Signalwriter (86) - Houston, Texas, USA - OCT 19, 2010
On draft at the brewery, here’s a smoked porter with the right nose and a fresh taste. It’s dark without being too dense; flavorful without being too dry. The body is smooth with modest carbonation and it went down easy. A great combination of smoke and sweet, I thought this Pro-Am had a much better balance than some of the bigger-brand SPs. brokensail (16645) - Dublin, California, USA - OCT 9, 2010
A: The pour is a dark brown color with some hints of red and a solid finger or two worth of brown head.
S: The smoke is certainly there, but is pleasant and in balance. A formidable amount of roasted malts (in a good way, however) and some bittersweet dark chocolates.
T: Coffee, lots of roast, and chocolate in the non-smoke category. The smoke is present, but again, in check and provides a nice compliment to the other flavors in the beer.
M: The body is medium with a smooth, medium, carbonation.
D: Thank you, Southern Star, for not over-smoking this beer. It’s nice to have a beer where the smoke is used as a complimentary flavor and not *the* flavor. MaltOMeal (1094) - Land of Sugar, Texas, USA - SEP 28, 2010
On tap. Pours black with a light-brown head. Nose is of smoked ham. This is the same smell of their other smoked beer. Taste is of cocoa powder and smoky, roast malt. Mouthfeel is medium-thin, chalky and very dry. Not bad to have in small quantities, but i couldn’t drink a large glass of this.

On tap at Gingerman Houston: Black in color with a touch of red when held up to the light. Aroma is a decent roasted malt with a touch of burnt toast mixed in. Flavor was a bit weak; basic roasted malt flavor & some coffee. Overall, it was enjoyable but a bit average. carboloader (674) - Houston, Texas, USA - SEP 7, 2010
On tap at Petrol Station. Pours black with small tan head. Full of roast, chocolate, and smoke. Not as hoppy as I expected, but a very tasty concoction. Plus, I had this after a Victory Hop Devil so my palate was exploded. Oily mouth feel and thinner than I expected. A great counterpart to their Buried Hatchet stout. mmmbeer (1429) - Austin, Texas, USA - SEP 1, 2010
Pint glass @ Draught House: served a thick, viscous, and black as midnight during a late summer thunderstorm out in the boonies color. Light tan ring around the glass for a head that did lace to a degree. Aroma of a heavily roasted malt, dark baker’s chocolate, and... smell closer (like you need to with this one)... SMOKE. Hits the mouth with a body wide enough to fit your lies clean through in, malt is very noticeable and was almost charred by the taste, some coffee, nuts, and dark chocolate in the middle, finish is pure evil straight from hell- had a nice bitter with smoke laced ending that faded away just a little too quickly- just wished it would have lasted a little longer. Wanted to give this to the beer geeks in the parking lot- they would have jumped started into puberty within seconds after drinking a sip. A beer that can do that is a winner in my book. kidmartinek (5007) - austin, Texas, USA - AUG 31, 2010
A mixed bag. It starts off really good. Its cloudy orange colored in
the glass. There is no head maintained though. The aroma is ginger,
cinnamon, dough, and other spices. Tastes reall spicy like a
vegetable, herb beer. Texture is nice. Full-line and satisfying.
Aftertaste is very gingerbread cookie-like. SudsMcDuff (8488) - .....Manchester United.........., Texas, USA - AUG 27, 2010

Cask: Flying Saucer, 10th Anniversary party .. . Pours a still dark black, very low brown head .. . the lakers will win by 12 .. . light roast, with a very light touch of roasted burnt peppers, as you work through the pint, tickles the throat and chest a touch, but mild. . the original is better but awesome to see SS experimenting like this! .. . you won! you won! upstairs! down low.. what you gonna brush now huh?!?!
