Deep amber oange pour with off-white head. Caramel and toasted malt sugars with light piney hops. Flavor is sweet caramel malt with a biscuity/toast finish. Light bitter finish. Lingering candied malt.

Bottle. Pours golden amber with a small frothy white head. Aroma of light malts, toasted grains, bread and some caramel. Flavor was slightly sweet with caramel, fruit, bread, earth and grains.

Southern Tier 2X Steam has a sessionable quality that hides the higher ABV well. Light citrus hop aroma coming from a light amber pour with a decent initial head that dies a little too fast. Taste is heavy on the pine notes with some citrus quality. Finish is slightly bitter with a nice peppery quality. 2X Steam is a refreshing quaff.

Dark amber liquid, average sized head, white and quickly vanishing. Classic herbal lager aroma, with some fruity notes (pear?). Light, nice mouthfeel, long bitter finish. Taste is a little licorice, smooth bitterness, very good balance.

Bottle:   Golden, small to moderate frothy white head, little lacing.   Sweaty aroma, slightly vegetal, musty, ugh....   Sweet corny start, rather heavy in both sweetness and corn like adjuncts.   A little mealy too, make that more than a little.   Compared to Anchor Steam this one is severely lacking.   Feels thick that’s for sure.   A little astringency on the backside.   I don’t know what this is, but its not as smooth as most California Commons.   And no idea how it rates as high as it does.   Too sweet and cornmeal like.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2014 Orange with a slight haze, thin soapy head, and decent lacing; No Carbonation. Aroma of bread, floral hops, roasted barley and mild pale malts. Same goes for the flavor but some very strong booziness;. Light body and no carbonation. Not really digging this.

Moderate corn nose. Hazy amber, medium foamy head. Surprising intensity, very lagery, corn is dominant, just sweet enough to temper the intensity. Grass appears at midpalate, significantly strong for the style. Some cherry notes are also present. Medium body. I have not had a great deal of experience with this style, but this is by far the most memorable.

fiercepanda (615) - Missouri, USA - JAN 1, 2014
A clear golden orange beer with a barely there white head. The aroma is sweet malt and lots of grain with a little fruitiness. The flavor is lemon and grain with a barely bitter hop finish.

Pours dark gold with a nice white head that leaves a lot of lacing. The aroma just kind of screams beer with a nice mix of malt and hop. The taste is very well balanced with solid flavor. Quite different, not exactly remarkable, but definitely drinkable especially at 8%.

Amber pour and an unexciting grain aroma. The flavor is a little odd - strong grains (rye?), a fair amount of sweetness, a little tangerine, and some citrus peel bitterness. The hops lay low, but it is still hard to believe that this is a steam beer. It is one of the better ones imo.
