Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Choclatey, very hoppy stout. Very faint lactose smoothness but carbonation covers it mostly. Chocolate and coffee aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured a deep black color with a frothy and thick tan head. Aroma is caramel, toast, coffee, chocolate, and a faint spruce. Taste is sweet up front then it mellows out to a nice and rich chocolate and bitter finish. Body is very creamy and slightly thick.

Nice dark pour with tan head. Nice roasted aroma with hints of coffee. Very smooth taste, with a nice stout taste. I like it.

Southern Tier’s sweet milk Stout. Named "Double" because of the two varieties of hops used. They come through nicely actually, a bit of a floral tone behind the rich malts.

Taste wise, I like this much better than Left Hand Milk Stout. Creaminess and mouthfeel, I’ve gotta give it to Left Hand. Black pour with a nice tan head. Chocolatey barley and lactose on the taste with some nice creaminess. Solid beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass with an inch tall fizzy head. Picking up a dark bread note with some chocolate mixed in. Taste is smooth, sweetness with nice medium mouthfeel. Finishes a bit more bitter than expected, dark chocolate comes to mind. Well put together milk stout.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree, 12/21/12

Aroma: The nose has some caramel malts, chocolate, a milky sweetness, and some toffee notes
Appearance: Pours a dark brown color with a small light-brown colored head and some mild lace
Flavor: The taste is definitely on the sweet-side, though not cloyingly so, and it has a mildly bitter finish
Palate: The body is medium, with a smooth, clean feel, a soft-to-average carbonation, and a creamy finish
Overall Impression: Overall, I think this one turned out very nicely. The old add about milk stouts in the description is hilarious, come get some nursing mothers and invalids! Anyway, as for the beer itself, they got some nice milky sweetness and creaminess out of the lactose. The 7.5% is extremely well hidden. All-in-all, this one works pretty well.

12oz bottle pours almost opaque black with frothy mocha colored head. The aroma of roasted malts, hints of coffee and chocolates. This is a medium bodied beer. The flavors are of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee with an underlying sweet base. Very good stout. Thought it would be sweeter but it is muted under the malt and chocolate flavors.

12 oz. bottle via trade with DrSilverworm - Pours a dark brown color with a small light tan head. Faint tiny spotted lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and light coffee. Flavor is sweet lightly roasted malt and light herbal hops. Finish is fairly smooth and sweet. Medium body. A very nice beer. Thanks Chris.
