Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called cream or sweet stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker. Surely! Of course, we couldnt stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Pours a just barely translucent dark brown with a thin beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is predominately sweet, with a malty, sugary profile, with just a hint of bitterness. Alcohol is very noticeable. Mouthfeel is well above average for a beer of this style, with a velvety palate. In sum: One of the best milk stouts Ive tried, comparable to those made by Left Hand and Duck Rabbit. However, the Southern Tier pedigree is there--tasting this, you can see the links to Chocolat, Jah-va, and Creme Brulee Stouts. Think of this as an "imperial milk stout."

Flaske: Brunsort l med et lille skumhoved. Duften er sdlig maltet. Smagen er derimod kompleks med en smule rg og bacon ovenp en meget sd sweet stout. Dejlig l egentlig. Med masser af southern tier sdme.

larsga (7470) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUN 2, 2012
Small brown head. Opaque black body goes dark brown at edges. Earthy chocolatey sugary aroma with roasty caramelly resiny notes. Dry-sweet chocolatey raisin taste with perfumy dusty notes. Fullish body. Mild, soft, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish burnt dusty earthy aftertaste with sooty chocolate and sugar notes. Lovely, balanced, and highly drinkable. (0.355l bottle, Gaasa, Oslo.)

Bottle. Black with a beige head leaving lacing. Aroma: roasted, malty, fruity. Taste: medium roast, raisins, lactic, sweet with chocolate, brown sugar and some licorice. This is nice, sure, but I think I had expected more.

Bottle purchased at Wegmans in Niagara Falls. Pours a dark opaque brown/ black, with a khaki head, and rings of lacing. Aroma is a little smokey, slightly sweet. Tastes sweet malt, a touch bitter. Not there best, not bad though.

Nice dark brown pour with ring of faint tan head. Smells sweet and with a bit of vanilla. Flavor is massively roasty and more lactose sweetness. Big rich chocolatey and huge roast malt backbone almost verges on burnt a little. Pretty damn tasty.

Malt, bread, chocolate, roast, and coffee in the aroma. Flavor is sweet but not overwhelmingly so. Coffee/cocoa bitterness and a little vanilla in the finish. Really smooth, and really good.

Pitch black pour with dark brown head a half inch thick. Smells of chocolate and root beer. Thick medium carbonated mouth feel. Lactose and chocolate flavor, just a hint of malt. Leaves a great slightly bitter, mostly sweet finish with more lactose.

12oz bottle. Poured in a Southern Tier snifter glass. Black pour, light tan head. Aroma of cold coffee, chalky malts. Tastes of a strong Milk Stout. Nice lactose character with loads of roast, licorice, hidden chocolate, and more bitter roast. It is a hearty beer for sure. Perfect for the summer months! Finishes dry and enjoyable. (3349)
