Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. This is nearly perfect and quite enjoyable. Plenty of creamy goodness with nothing over-the-top to spoil things. Not to be missed.

Fantastic milk stout, pitch black in the glass with a tight head. Sweet without being cloyingly so. Had the nitro on draft at the brewery and it was every bit as good at Left Hand’s version.

Appearance: velvety near-black, with a short, creamy, light tan head and some lacing. Aroma: melted milk chocolate, lightly toasted brown bread, cocoa powder, vanilla, and cream. Taste: sweet dark chocolate and vanilla, with a hint of crème fraiche at the end. Finish: smooth, creamy, with lingering delicately sweet milk and dark chocolate notes. Notes: A lot of milk stouts overdo the lactose, leaving a slightly unpleasant sour-ish twang. In this, the lactose was perfectly subdued, giving just enough body and sweetness without that off note. In essence, this beer was like drinking a dark chocolate jello pudding cup. Absolutely phenomenal. I’d drink this every day.

Pours dark ruby with a large tan head. Smells of roast and chocolate. Taste is sweet, roasty, and chocolaty. Medium-bodied with a slick, wet texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Southern Tier 2X Stout finishes with a lingering mild bitterness.

’Whoa, what a beer! Take me to the river. Served at a perfect temperature with a colossal, very light tan, thick, foamy head that just sits there and loads of lace. Color is an opaque brown black. Aroma is mainly malt, roast, and caramel, hint of toffee. Flavors like nose, mild also, roast, easy bittersweet. Finish is like flavor, incredibly easy drinking. Choice beer.

Southern Tier 2X Stout is a real treat. Bready aroma coming from a dark pour with a creamy tan head. Taste has notes of licorice, chocolate and coffee. Lactose qualities are not real apparent. Finish is real smooth. 2X Stout is another hit from the folks at ST.

Dark chocolate aroma. Black color with a thin head. Smooth and sweet as it warmed up a bit, replaced by a coffee bitterness later on.

This is my current favorite Milk Stout. The taste is great, it's really smooth, and strong. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
