“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Wonderful aroma of spice and pumpkin notes. Light reddish appearance. Taste is a little skunky, malty flavor. Not impressed by this beer.

22oz from beer junction. 2015 vintage. Tons of brown sugar, holiday spices and slight taste of balsamic vinagar. Really deep tasting that does not fade. Alcohol is really present on the back end. Great!

Converting ticks to ratings. Had this back in Januari '12, at the Beer Temple. Very sweet beer, malty, berries, some chocolate, raisins, alcohol, resin. Medium to full bodied. Decent.

Sweet malt, bitter hops and slightly burnt toffee on the nose. the body is sweet and rich with buttery toffee, caramel malt, apricots, raisins, astringent citrus hops and some dark berries. Thick and a bit sticky with a bit of booziness. Not bad, but I couldn’t drink a lot of it.

22-ounce bottle pours dark copper-ruby with very small light-tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is vinous, yet malty sweet and hoppy. I detect salted caramel, figs, dates, raisins, prunes, carmelized brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup, nuts. Flavor: all of the above, yet seriously ramped up! Flavors attack the taste buds, then cling to the tongue, and evolve as it warms in your mouth. Mouthfeel: thick, rich, slick -- a meal in a bottle. Who needs food.? Seriously malty. It’s sweet, yet mercifully not cloyingly so. I find too many barleywines to be too sweet. This one has a complimentary bitterness that, for me, is balanced nicely.

Pours a ruby red-brown with light tan head. A strong dark fruit malt, sweet caramel, and bourbon barrel aroma. A sweet malt, caramel, dark fruit, and bourbon barrel taste. A lingering dry and sweet malt aftertaste with little bourbon.

Bomber. Pours a red brown with a dissipating beige head and sweet fruity, caramel aroma. Taste is of ripe fruit, alcohol, caramel, and malt notes into the sweet, fruity finish.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Originally reviewed 6/3/2011. Deep garnet body with an off-white head. The head doesn’t last long and it doesn’t leave much lacing. Delicious smell. Caramel and toffee malts with strong dark fruit aromas. Maybe some bananas in the background. Not a lot of the hops come through. Taste has a bit of hoppiness right at the start, then sweet. Not a complex as the smell. The sweetness overwhelms what I can only imagine to be subtlety in the flavors. A good hop bitterness in the back lingers. Thick and a bit syrupy, which makes sense considering the sweetness. Not a lot of carbonation makes it feel thicker. The drinkability really starts to get sluggish as this beer warms. The slightest bit of alcohol warming in the finish. Great smell, slightly disappointing flavor. Still tastes good, just not great.

American take on "barley wine," with a label that begins by touting how many different types of hops were used. Difficult to analyze because a four-pack yielded four different drinking experiences. In general, pours a burnt copper/burgundy with small to medium khaki head that offers some lacing and a bit of skim. Rests in the glass as a black cherry red. Spruce and maple makes for an odd combination, but that’s what most of these bottles offered. With some variation, those are the dominant aromas along with alcohol. On the palate, molasses sometimes dominates, sometimes Pine-Sol takes over with its cleaning agent taste. Leather and dark fruit made appearances in two glasses. With aeration, sweet trend resolves into the maple again. In one bottle, hop bitterness provided a light tweak for a nice finish. In others, it was stronger and poorly integrated. Overall, this truly is one to put on the back burner.
