“blended hoppe & unearthly” High in the winter sky, two parallel stick figures are visible & known as “the twins,” or the constellation Gemini. The astronauts of the 1960s flew as teams of two in a program named after the celestial pairing. At Southern Tier, we have our own fraternal twins, Hoppe & Unearthly. Blended together & placed in this vessel, the mission of our Gemini is to travel high & take passengers on a journey far into the heavens. 10.5% abv • 5.8ºL * 22° Plato

Very good, strong IPA. Surprised that the coloring is not much better than a macroswill, but the aroma and taste sure are.

From Feb 2008 I got a bottle each from Nutbrown and Joe1510 in trade...thanks Alan & Joe! Hmmm..waxed over cap on this 22oz bottle that I found to be kind of a pain in the ass to open(Hey, I've dealt with Grand Teton waxed bottles) but..it pours a clear light gold with at least a 2 finger head of foam that shrinks some but never less than about a 1/2" by the end of the session. Lots of lacing too! The smell is *very* nice for the style and the way I almost expect from the style: equal portions of caramel malt & grapefruit hops. The taste starts of a bit sweeter than I would have expected judging from how balanced the nose was but the hops are there all right, nice notes of grapefruit, some floral, a tiny bit of grass and it's still dominated by the sweetness from the malt. Maybe just a tad too sweet, even for me. The balance just isn't at the level I like for a DIPA but that's not saying that I'm not liking what I'm drinking. Confused yet? ;^) The mouthfeel is really thick for me, the carbonation is on the medium-light side and the finish is slightly bitter. It's good stuff but finishing one bottle will do it for me as I'm starting the notice the abv though I don't notice it in the taste nor much during and after the swallow. Bottom line: I think it's a really good DIPA that the only complaint I have for it is that it's just a *tad* bit too sweet. Not too much of a complaint, when I think about it.

Bottle from BOE, picked up directly from store/warehouse Saturday 27th December consumed at home, Sunday 28th December 2014 Bit disappointed that this appears to be from older stick, i.e. older label, different write-up from 2014 version, and at about £10 a bottle that is a little frustrating. However to be fair to BOE I could find no BBD or BBE date, though on the flip side one would have thought their stock management should have weeded this out. Sweet in the way that many US beers of this style can often be. Soft in mouth and as Loz suggests feels quite filling, not sure how this would have differed if very fresh but I guess it would have been a little crisper, that said I am enjoying it. Colour is warm gold/light amber with sticky white head. A sweet, malty and slightly boozy beer with some oomph.... A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov15 3.4

Pours a rusty orange color with a nice white tan head. Nose is bitter sweet and hoppy. Taste is bitter sweet as well with a caramel and toffee with the alcohol well hidden. Finish is sweet and ends on the same tasting notes. A nice sipper. Quaff Score 8 / 10

Bomber. Pours a hazy copper orange with an off white head and aroma of hops and citrus. Taste is bittersweet, nice citrus, pine and hop notes with caramel into the sweet, fruity finish. Delicious DIPA

"Haven’t tried the hoppe half of this blend but i want to. Well balanced, sweet malt, lemons and pine on the nose and in the flavor. Full round feel. A couple months old but tasted and smelled quite fresh. Just as good or better than unearthly. "

Transfer from BA review on 2-25-13- I heard they discontinued this at Southern tier so when I saw a bottle (bottled on 2/12/12) I thought I better snatch it up and give it a go. Poured from 22 oz bomber into a snifter glass Appearance – Pours a quite hazy orange color with a small white head. The head fades rather fast to leave only a light level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell – Upon pouring the aroma is sweet and fruity with strong notes of an earthy and grassy smell. The sweet is comprised of some caramel with the fruity being of a tropical nature with aromas of mango, papaya and tangerine. Upon pouring the sweeter aromas are the most potent, but as the beer sits longer, the other aromas in the nose, the earthy hop and grassy smells of the brew get stronger and begin dominating more. These smells, when mixed with aromas of alcohol, give the brew a nice warming and earthy/grassy smell. Taste – The taste begins bready with some fruit flavors of orange and a light caramel sweetness. Upfront and mixed with these tastes is an initially light earthy hop taste. As the taste moves on the sweeter citrus fades while the earthy hop and bready tastes grow stronger and are joined by a grapefruit and grassy hop tastes. Toward the end, an alcohol flavor mingles with the hop and bready tastes to leave a quite pleasant hop blended resinous, bready, and boozy flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to above average side in terms of its creaminess with a carbonation level that is quite light. The thicker and smoother body is nice of the earthy and boozy flavors of the brew with the lower carbonation accentuating these even more. Overall – This is one tasty and hop profile balanced (citrus, earthy and grassy) imperial. It has a strong boozy, bready and earthy taste making it a fantastic sipper. It is too bad they are discontinuing this. If you can find a bottle somewhere I say give it a go. It’s delicious.
