On tap at Mr. Goodbar, served way too cold. Not as good as their previous black IPA, this was a decent beer. Only getting anundertated bitterness and average mouthfeel, getting more yeast and spicyness. Dark brown colour with a small head, lace rings left. Yeast in aroma. Crafted in the increasingly popular Cascadian dark ale style, Ne’tra Gal is dark mocha in color with rich notes of chocolate and piny hops complimented by toasted malt and raisins. Although categorized as a Black IPA, it has the feel of an English ale or dry stout, and its ABV of under 5% is a lot lighter than typical beers of this style. Still, I enjoyed this eclectic ale and it paired well with the Buffalo burger that I had for dinner.

[3508-20101204] Tap. Earthy aroma is a little grassy. Clear, dark red brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. More earthy chocolate malt in the flavour with grainy bitter hops throughout. Medium body. Interesting, like a meaty IPA and a nice change without the usual citrus base.

Growler. Pours a deep brown with a medium bubbly off white head. Aroma of fresh floral and citrusy hops, caramel, toasted malt and a hint of dark chocolate. Flavor of the same nice citrusy hop notes, caramel malt, some roasted malt. Smooth hop bitterness. 2010-12-04. Very dark brown-black bod, small foamy beige head. 3+ Modest aroma, dry malt, dusty with earthy accents, mild grapefruit citrus character. 7+ Average plus palate. Decent but doesn’t quite come together for me today. Flavour is a bit odd at first, with some dusty malt, mild citrus undertones that seem out of place and not aggressive enough to take prominence. 7+ Decent but does not quite come together for me today. On tap for growler fills at Half Time. Pours a clear caramel brown with a medium thick beige and tan head. Big fat citrus, resinous and dank. Medium bodied, light roast, malt. A bit empty feeling but mostly just because it’s about 4.6% and tough to get tons of body on it. But still quite tasty. Nice slow grapefruit finish with light toast. The aroma is roasty, toasted malt, nuts. The appearance is black, translucent, red hue. The flavor is like the aroma, roasty and toasty, with nuts, and after a second, a very subtle earthy hop bitterness. The finish segues into a resiny, earthy hoppiness, which endures. The beer is medium in body, maybe a tad thin, silky. Low in carbonation. Not bad, but not great. Definitely would call this a Black IPA. Tastes and smells more like a schwarzbier, which wouldn’t be accurate either.
