"nothing spectacular, but a good session beer at the least. looks...um...like the picture. smell is sweet malt, honey, earthy hop balance. body thin but fits the style. could be better, could be worse, easy drinking flavor. " Clarkdvm (511) - Florida, USA - OCT 4, 2014
Bottle in US. Wonderful sweet, nut aroma. Flavors comprise caramel, syrup, candy. No bitterness. Rich brown ale- is too sweet though. Darkmagus82 (2302) - - AUG 26, 2014

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – Pours a brown-mahogany color with highlights of red shinning through. Upon pouring there is a small off-white head that fades fast leaving very little lacing on the sides of the glass but a thin film floating atop the brew that lasts for quite some time.
Smell- The aroma is heaviest of a caramel and toffee sweet smell mixed with some notes brown bread and a light amount of cocoa.
Taste – The taste begins with a bready flavor of dark roasted malt with some light chocolate and caramel. The sweeter flavors that were present initially fade quickly as some flavors a more bitter grape/wine come to the tongue. This more bitter wine like flavor as well as a light herbal hop flavor, that comes to the tongue at the end of the taste, end up combining with the roasted malt and the light sweetness to leave a odd fruity, roasty, and somewhat of light bitter tannin flavor to be left the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The thickness and creaminess of the beer was very average with a carbonation level that was average as well. The middle road fits this beer rather well as the darker flavors would likely be better with lower carbonation and higher thickness, while the wine like tannin and sweet flavors are likely better with the opposite (thin body and higher carbonation).
Overall – While at first I wasn’t wild about the brew, it grew on me as I drank it more. The mix of the roasted flavors and the more fermented grape flavors create a rather soothing taste. Not bad.

Spaten Dunkle on tap
Dark amber brown with a durable foamy beige head.
Surprisingly rich and nutty aroma. This is followed up by the flavor which is nutty but not rich. The feel is a bit too thin and might benefit from a touch higher carbonation.

UPDATED: OCT 13, 2014 Overly sweet with lots of dark fruits, some caramel and some bread. Disappointing bitterless and slightly sour finish. snoworsummer (5696) - baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUL 24, 2014
From a bottle. Pours medium tawny brown with a fizzy white head. Tastes malty, like stale grains, caramel, raisins. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet roasted malt and raisins. sonnycheeba (5988) - Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUL 24, 2014
Bottle. Pours cola brown with thin, beige head. Aroma is toasted and cookie malts, light caramel and vanilla, light nuttiness, and faint woody notes. Flavor is dry malts, light toast, mixed nuts, faint dark fruit notes, and some woodiness; dry finish. Light/medium body and medium carbonation. superspak (5594) - Michigan, USA - JUL 13, 2014
12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 8/27/2013. Pours crystal clear ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light roast, raisin, pear, apple, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light roast, raisin, pear, apple, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Zero bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of carmel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light roast, raisin, pear, apple, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good balance and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light hop notes; with a very clean finish with zero cloying flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is a good Munich dunkel style. Good balance and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A pleasant and enjoyable offering. generallee08 (772) - New York, USA - JUN 24, 2014
It has a deep reddish amber body that is very dark but also has good clarity. On top there is a thin light tan head that fades quickly down to a ring of lacy foam. The aroma has just a simple sweet caramel malty presence with no hint of hops at all. The flavor has a candy like sweetness with caramel, light roasted notes and very light floral hops in the background. The palate has a sweet malty finish, soft carbonation and a modest medium body that is very drinkable.
