This beer is our speciality. In 1894 Spaten became the first brewery in Munich to produce this brand of light lager. Golden in color with a well-balanced hop-flavor. The full rounded body is a superb balance between hops and a malty sweetness.

   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 2/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 13/20
ARH (1137) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 26, 2014
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2014 12 oz bottle poured into a shaker. The aroma starts out with a prevalent banana and clove note, which fades and is replaced by something more yeast-like, maybe toasted bread too. As the drink settles, a slight mildew and wet leather start to come through. The beer is a clear, pale straw color with a light, bubbly head that reduces to a thin, but present, layer and leaves a light lacing. The taste is a medium high sweetness with a light bitterness. It’s a light bodied beer with a creamy and smooth texture and a light, fuzzy carbonation. The initial flavors that strike the tongue are honey, and caramel, both with a mellow presence. This is accompanied by a light grass note, a mild, sweet lemon, and a very faint spice. The finish is crisp, with a mellow spicy hop bite. The aftertaste is floral, bread, and spice, but it’s a light aftertaste the fades at a moderate pace.

Gul öl med vitt skum. Doft och smak av malt och pilsnerhumle. Något sötare än många andra i stilen.

Keg at Mizens Railway Oktoberfest. Slightly sour yeasty malts aroma. Gold. Slow bubbles. Creamy white head. Gains in bitterness. Hops, burnt caramel and malt. Light. Thin. Fizzy. Abrupt. Good stuff.

500ml bottle. Pours straw with a small white head. Nose is straw, grain, pilsner malt, white pepper and lemon. Medium carbonation. Taste is cereal grain, straw, white pepper, lemon, grass and hops. Light peppery bitter finish. Pretty decent. Very thirst quenching.

De geur is typisch duits bier.

2015 BJCP Category: 4A Munich Helles

AROMA: Fairly strong skunky scent due to green bottle. Otherwise a lightly sweet, clean grain malt presence of pure pilsner malt. Faint Noble hop spicy scent. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Pale golden hue (2-3 SRM); extremely clear. Small, white foamy head never completely evaporates. 2/3

FLAVOR: Moderately sweet clean pilsner malt throughout. A touch of authentic honey flavor in the background grows a little stronger on the finish and lingers in the aftertaste briefly. Spicy Noble hops are present, but mild and subtle. Palette is definitely more malty than hoppy, but far from cloying. Would probably be a perfect score if not for the lightstrike flaw. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; medium carbonation. Smooth, crisp and refreshing with slight malty sweet aftertaste. Highly sessionable even at 5.2% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Pretty much the progenitor of the style and still one of the better examples after all these years. If only it were in cans! 8/10
