Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

Pours a deep black color with a robust malt aroma. Taste is initially of soft malt mixed with rich dark malts. Once you swallow this beer, it leaves a bite of hops on the palate. A lingering IPA style in flavor with a stout look. Im a fan of this black IPA.

Bottle at the Black IPA tasting in Beer&Beyond shop. Pours brown-black with a medium frothy head. Toasted malts and hoppy aroma. Taste - sweet, fruity, honey, nuts, chocolate, hints of alcohol, low bitterness. Medium-bodied, smooth texture. Nice.

Bomber from LaPrimera. Pours an inky black with a tan head leaving a lot of lace. Aroma has black patent malts, coffee, brown sugar and pine. Taste is of bakers chocolate, grass, bitter espresso, grapefruit and pine. Medium to full bodied and chewy. Nice roasty/grassy blend. Finishes nicely bittersweet, leaning a bit to the bitter side with a pinch of salt. This is a surprisingly excellent brew from a more typically mediocre brewer.

This coffee colored beer with a creamy head had a mild inviting aroma. It looks so much like a porter or stout. It tastes like and IPA with very hop heavy flavors. Well done not over powering. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A not so great black. Pours a nice black with a thick tan head. Smells good, like coffee and maybe a bit of cherries. Taste however is kind of boring, with a quite bitter aftertaste. Had in the bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Cannery Row Brewing Company in Monterey This was recommended by our waitress Alice. She knows her beer and ales. The ale poured a deep black like a porter with a creamy tan head. The aroma was of pine and chocolate. This is clearly one the more complex IPAs I had lately. The combination of roated malt ahd hops are blended well. The solid mediun body had average carbonaion. The pine resin and roasted malts mix well for the finish.

Poured a finger and half of tan head on a black body. Looks great. The aroma is pine, spruce and some caramel candy. Enjoyable. The taste has nice roasted malt with a big dose of pine bitterness. I like it. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. Its the best of roast malt and bitter.

A smooth ipa with a crisp roasted flavor. A really nice brew that is good served both cold or at room temperature.

Draft at Blind Tiger, NYC. Coffee and dark chocolate, some fresh mintiness from the hops. Refreshing IPA backbone. Roasty coffee with crisp oily hops as well. Tricked me at first when I smelled it, I thought for sure it was a strong stout, very cool. Nicely put together beer with solid stout and IPA components. Great black ipa.

On tap at Baileys, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out buttery notes, lightly roasted malt, and light hops. Flavour brings out roast upfront, followed by a considerably harsh hop punch. Buttery palate, finishing on harsh woody, hoppy notes. Decent stuff, but a little off the mark.
