COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Speakeasy Ales and Lagers is happy to introduce Scarface Imperial Stout. A complicated brew behind its fiercely black exterior is a mlange of subtly different roasted malt flavors that add nuance and depth to a style of beer that is too often heavy and one dimensional. To add a bit of roundness to the flavor we diverted about 20% of the brew into our Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, one of which we topped up with cacao nibs from our friends at local San Francisco organic chocolate makers, TCHO, for a period of oak-aging before blending it back into the primary batch. This is a special beer that reveals a little something different about itself every sip. Malts: American 2-row, Belgian Dark Caramel, French Coffee Malt, Chilean Black Malt and English Roasted Barley Hops: Columbus Alcohol by Volume: 9.5% 70 IBUs

Bottle: Pours a dark coffee brown with a thin tan head the dissipates quickly. Sweet caramel and chocolate with some roasted malts making an appearance on the nose. The taste is slightly sweet chocolate and molasses with a roasty then bittersweet finish. Its medium and slick in body with a very soft carbonation level. Overall I enjoyed this beer. Maybe a touch too boozy to be easy drinking but it wasnt a struggle to finish the bomber. Id get it again.

October 30, 2016. Bottle at home.
Black with a large frothy brown head. Aroma is roasted and malty with dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, hints of ink, ash, licorice, light notes of vanilla and molasses in the background. Taste is bitter, light sweet, roasted and malty. Quite bitter finish, slightly dry, with some ash and ink, cocoa and coffee, some grassy bitter hop notes, light malty sweetness with toffee and dark berries. Medium to full bodied, soft to average carbonation.
Solid imperial stout, a bit too bitter in the finish though.

Black pour under a thin khaki hued head. Big chocolate and roast and light clove/cinnamon tone almost like a Mexican chocolate cake, but sweeter and with a dose of milk chocolate. Rich flavor thats bright and roasty, with loads of bittersweet dark chocolate, some kind of earthy spice, a little less spice and Mexican-like than the nose but theres still something there--with a weirdly almost pineapple-like tone near the end. Theres something odd in there I cant put my finger on, its not just boozy dark chocolate and roast malt with a hint of coffee. Hard to put my finger on. But its delightful nonetheless.

Appearance: nearly opaque black with brown around the margins, one fat finger of medium dense light beige head, excellent retention and chunky lacing. (4/5) Aroma: roasty malts, dry cocoa, liquorice, hint of bourbon barrel. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate biter. (7/10) Medium body, soft carbonation, dry bitter warming finish. (3/5) Yeah, I know its supposed to be spring, but Ive got too many of these dark things on hand, gotta drink em down. Not all that impressive an imperial stout - tends a bit to the thin side, and the barrel notes are muted, even after warming. On the up side, its not heavy, so its fairly easy drinking for a nearly double digit ABV. Pleasant enough. (14/20)
