The brewers at the Speight’s Brewery in Dunedin have crafted a light and refreshing wheat beer, the prefect accompaniment for a New Zealand Summer.

A brilliant, deep golden hue, Speight’s Summer Harvest has a sweet, apricot aroma, reminiscent of the central Otago late summer fruit harvest.

A combination of malted wheat and malted barley is used to give the distinctive, slightly dry flavour and clean finish.

Pours golden with white head. Powerful apricot aroma. Slight malt and hop flavours present at first, but the apricot flavour really overpowers these and makes them almost non-existent by the end. The Apricot flavour is almost artificial. Quite a watery beer, and a slight yeasty film is left at the roof of the mouth at the finish. Disappointing.

Amazing beer tasted on tap at Speights brewery in New Zeland, tastes like drinking the juice of an apricot. Yum.

Light, cloudy golden colour with plenty of head. Designed as a light summer quencher but as a wheat beer it’s a bit rich in apricot. None of the classic banana and clove aromas or flavours come through and again the apricot is a bit overwhelming. It doesn’t even taste of real apricots, rather some sort of cordial. I could be wrong as my assertion only goes toward taste rather than brewing technique. Not a favourite I’m afraid.

This beer is really named Summer Harvest and weighs in at 4.5% ABV! Draft. A light golden beer with a thin white head. The aroma has strong notes of apricot. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of apricot, combined with medium notes of wheat ans light notes of spices. The body is light. Too much apricot for my liking.

330ml bottle. 4th bottle of a 6 pack and I haven’t managed to finish one yet as much as I would like to. This is my first ever drain pour. I noticed on the label "Contains apricot flavouring" which is where I assume the terrible artificial smelling apricot aroma comes from - I just couldn’t move past it. Sorry but cant recommend this one.

Bottle. Clear golden, average white head, no lace. Aroma is all peach jelly candies. Same candy fake-peach/apricot flavour completely swarms the palate. Sweet, a little thin (thankfully, otherwise this would be cloying), with a brief finish.

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2009 Blagh!... I knew there would be apricot, but I was not expecting this. Apricot flavouring plus a soapy aroma make this one reminiscent of an ’apricot body wash’. The taste isn’t as bad the the nose, as the apricot bodywash lets a few other tastes show through - grainy malt and a slight perfume hops. The finish is, surprisingly (!) sweet and full of apricot. Definitely a drain-pour, had I not paid for it.

See previous rating for Harvest. Retasted and still the same. Smells like a tarts window box but I love apricots so they hit my ’sweet spot’ can’t fault it for appearance but everything else is pretty dire.

donfardz64 (538) - Wellington, New Zealand, NEW ZEALAND - JAN 7, 2009
UPDATED: MAR 11, 2009 Pours golden, white fluffy head. Apricot aroma, with malt underneath, bit of hay. Flavour is mainly apricot, but tastes like apricot essence. Quite sweet. Slight hop bitterness brings back the sweetness a notch. Finishes quite skunky - like a diet cola. Refreshing but tastes like many corners have been cut.
