@le Trappiste, Le Havre - cloudy orange beer with a long lasting foam; aroma of esters, orange and spices, gently perfumy; full-bodied; sweet and fizzy, some bitterness, sharp spicyness and fruity fizzy finish - you’ll need some flexibility to see an ipa in this belgian strong ale

Clear golden color with frothy off-white head. Aroma has classic resiny hops with some dried orange peel and underlying biscuit malt. Taste follows with quite intense bitter hop notes like pine resin, grass and yellow grapefruit pith. Medium body and carbonation. Quite old school IPA with harsh hop bitterness and a solid malt backbone.

BigMomma (243) - Leuven, BELGIUM - JUL 19, 2017
I was quiet surprised to find this beer at my local supermarket in Belgium. Light orange color with a white head. Fresh nose full of hops and malt, some touches of citrus fruits and pine. Sweet flavor, thick body, lots of hop flavors ending in a strong bitter but everlasting dry aftertaste. Well balanced and very drinkable. Superbly enjoyable on a hot summer day and quite unexpected style for a Trappist beer. Comes close to a very fresh Orval.

Gangstergafje (1144) - Capelle aan den IJssel, NETHERLANDS - JUL 11, 2017
11-07-2017; bottle; at home (bought Albert Heijn, Capelle a/d IJssel, The Netherlands). Just days after I wondered if there are any Trappist ales besides Blond, Double, Triple and Quadruppel, this beer shows up in my local supermarket. The beer looks like a simple IPA. The colour of the beer is a nice golden amber. The beer seems clear, but it actually has quite some haziness over it. On top of the beer some rough white foam is formed, which collapses rather quickly leaving a minimal drape. On the glass some nice lacing is left behind. The smell of the beer is nice. I smell some malty tones, forming a nice, slight bread-like, base. On top of this there are a lot of hops. I smell some clear American hop aromas. The smell is filled with aromas of pine needles, a touch of resin, some floral aromas and a touch of zest. It also is quite spicy. It is not as refreshing as some citrusy hops can be, but quite robust and firm. This fits the Trappist beer character. Nice. The taste of the beer also is nice. It is a robust IPA. There is a sweet malty base, with on top lovely robust hop flavours, giving a strong bitterness but also a slight fresh acidity. It is nice, piny and robust. It fits the Trappist character well. Even though the robust hops, the beer remains balanced. Amazing. The palate of the beer is good. Body is medium, but higher than that of most IPA’s. The texture is slightly sticky and carbonation is medium. The finish is nice and contains some clear flavours of piny American hops. Well done. Well worth the trappist label.
