COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Hazy golden orange pour with small buttery head. Aroma of caramel, malts, yeast and hops. Taste of caramel malts, yeast, slight fruit and faint hops. Medium bodied, higher carbonation, dry slightly peppery finish. True to the style, very enjoyable.

Like a good belgian beer. Cool but a little bit too serious. A good experience, no more.

Bottle. Hazy orange with small head. Belgian yeast, malt, some floral, some orange and some caramel in this one. Pretty much like a standard begian ale.

Lijkt mij wat overgewaardeerd met een 3.5 voor wat smaakt als een vrij normaal biertje met wat kruiden. Smaakt zeker niet als een trappist.

Slightly hazy dark golden color with white head. Aroma has sweet malt and honey notes, belgian yeast esters, mostly floral with some hay and earthy hops. Taste starts with sweet malt and yeast flavors, continues with belgian sugar and floral notes, finishes quite dry with a light bitterness. Medium body with medium plus carbonation. It really fits between the other classic belgian ales.

Bottle in Boston. Small, soapy head on a juicy, somewhat hazy orange hued yellow. Aroma of juicy yeast. Great Belgian character, tripel like flavors in a much softer, rounder package. Some warm malts. Carb and body felt a little out of sync, or not living up to potential. But flavors were nice, and this was enjoyable. Nice.

colore arancio, torbida, schiuma media poco persistente. Aromi di malto e frutta. Al palato malto, caramella mou, vaniglia. Finale secco e leggermente amaro. Corpo medio. Un buon esempio di belgian ale.
