COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Solidly competent Belgian ale. Good drinkability and popularity. Nothing outrageous about it, but its solid. A little fruity.

Hazy yellow color. Aroma has banana, but pretty muted overall. Taste along the same lines. Pretty mediocre.

A nice, cloudy, honey-colored beer with a nice, firm, slightly yellow layer of foam. A fresh aroma of yeast and citrus fruits is released when the bottle has been opened. It tastes quite sweet, with a touch of fruits. The bitterness is quite present on the back of the tongue, and in the aftertaste.

330ml bottle from wee Beer Shop, Glasgow (£4.20):
Quite an interesting beer that definitely seemed like a Belgian offering as I worked my way down the glass, it was quite a lively & fresh beer that had a fluffy, light feel to it throughout. There was a nice balance to this one with some banana sweetness working well with the background fruits & yeast as well as some touches of funk featuring a little later on. The beer was definitely a good one that I enjoyed & wouldn't mind picking up again or, better still trying one of the breweries other offerings.

Pale orange pour - fairly hazy. The aroma has a rich clove and lightly malty with a bit of banana and peach. There's a very bright fruitiness in here. Lots of wheaty spice and a little bit of soft fruit and clove. There's a fairly pronounced spiciness. Some sticky sweetness and a bit of lemon as well. It's a pretty decent beer really.

Golden with thick fluffy head. Sweet bread with mild citrus and some noticeable spice. Interesting mouthfeel as it seems to linger down the middle of the tongue.
