Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Josephs Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Bottle 33 cl, gushed when I opened it. Pours a hazy orange with a small and fast fading white head and an aroma of fruity esters, spices, coreander, cloves, banana, peach, heavy malts, grassy hops and vanilla. The taste is medium sweet with a fizzy carbonation and a medium long bitter hoppy finish with some sweetness that sticks to the lips. Surpising for an American Trappist.

Goudgeel, troebel, witte schuimkraag die snel inzakt, veel koolzuur. Aroma: Fruitige esters, kruidig, koriander, kruidnagel, zoetige mouten. Smaak: Gist, banaan, koriander, kruidnagel, Belgische gist stijl, fruitig, iets zoet. Redelijke bitter met grassige en prikkrlige hinten. Medium body, veel koolzuur, prikkelig, afdronk is bitterzoet en iets droog. Prima trappist!

33 cl [email protected] in Trappist [email protected] 10 degrees C. Pours cloudy copper with medium white head with low retention but leaving a clotty white cover on the beer. Aroma of roasted malt, fruitiness and yeast. Taste reflects aroma adding a nice spiciness which also lingers in the malt dominated aftertaste. Very Belgian in character with a bubbly, creamy mouthfeel. Another great Trappist beer, but equalled or bettered by several of the Belgian equivalents which are also a lot less expensive in this country.
