COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

Hazy light brown beer with a beige head. Quite yeasty with a hint of floral citrus. A bit bland, some sourness, on the watery side, floral, slightly citrussy with some sweet bread in the after taste. Quite ok.

Gangstergafje (1227) - Capelle aan den IJssel, NETHERLANDS - AUG 30, 2017
30-08-2017; bottle; at home (bought at Albert Heijn supermarket, Capelle aan den IJssel, The Netherlands). The looks of the beer are fine. It looks like a typical Belgian Ale. The colour of the beer is a nice bright golden yellow. The beer itself is very cloudy and some yeast flakes and sediment can be seen in the glass. Not the most appetising view, but it's normal for a beer like this. On top of the beer a layer of rather rough, but soft, foam is formed. Foam retention isn't that great. After a short while only a very thin drape is left. Only some lacing is left on the glass. The smell of the beer is very nice. It is a typical Belgian Ale, but it is a very good one. There are some nice full malt aromas. Sweet malt aromas fill the nose pretty much medianly. It smells rich and somehow nutrient. I smell some syrup, honey, floral hops, a touch of hop bitterness, some nice fruity tones. There might be a hint of plum and apple there, very delicate though. I also smell some clear typical Belgian yeast aromas. They give the beer a nice and distinct creamy touch. Lovely. The taste has the same pleasant aspects. Rich and flavourful sweet malts, floral and bitter and refreshing hops, full creamy yeast flavours. It is a remarkably full and well balanced flavourful beer. I like it a lot. The palate of the beer is nice. Medium body, very smooth and creamy texture and rather high carbonation. The finish of the beer is nice. There is a nice dry bitterness in there, with leaving room for some fruity sweets as well. Great combo. All in all, a very nice beer. I think I even like this American Belgian Ale more than most of the Belgian ones. Hope the Belgians don't read that though.

Bottled 355ml. -from Magic Beer Room Zagreb. Pale golden coloured, medium sized white head, mild yeasty nose. Moderate malty, light herbal hoppy, yeasty and a bit phenolic with touch of spices and soft herbs in the finish. Nothing special here.

Bottle from Albert Heijn. Poured a hazy light orange amber with a thin white head. The aroma is Belgian yeast, light hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a dry crisp fresh mineral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Like a good belgian beer. Cool but a little bit too serious. A good experience, no more.
