Draught from Brauerei Spezial.

Clear medium to dark orange amber colour with a average to large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, toasted - caramel, smoke, wood smoke, light meat smoke, oak notes. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, wodd, wood smoke, smoked meat, caramel, dry. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110722]

From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden orange with a small, dense and white head. Aroma is mild smoked, slight meaty and light sweet. Sweet and slight smoked flavouref. Smooth and easy. Mild lasting smoked finish.

Dedollewaitor (16158) - Odense, DENMARK - JUL 13, 2011
Draught @ Spezial, Bamberg. Pours hazy golden with a fluffy white head and lacings. Suddued smoke and some bitter fresh hops in the nose. Medium and soft carbonation/body. Quite smoked and hoppy flavor for a Spezial beer. Quite like a great mix of their Rauch Lager and Ungespundets. Ends dry , bitter and hoppy. Very nice.

Tapped: Clear, golden to amber coloured, stable and lacy off-white head; caramelly ,sweet-malty and woody-smoky aromas in the nose, hops, too; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied, soft; lingering dryish hoppy and sweetish smoky-malty finish. Devilishly moreish stuff

My Bottom Line :
Toasted malts and smoky edges evolve in a perfectly cushiony mouthfeel before a lovely spicy hop bitterness settles on the tongue.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-An initially frothy head of foam drops into the misty amber.
-All flavors are levelled, of medium intensity.
-This tastes like a cousin of Schlenkerla Kräusen, with Spezial’s usually more moderate flavor impact. And both came out during the same summer too…
-The aroma is not as evocative as the flavor profile.
-The mouthfeel is fuller than their regular Rauch Lager.
-The smoke flavors are quite discreet, making this a cross between a Kellerbier and a Rauchbier.

On tap at the brewery pub.

Beer No. 110 on my tour through Austria, Germany and Denmark.
Draught at the brewpub. Pale amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, smoke and malt in the nose. Light roasted malt, smoke and some toffee with pretty short fruity smokey finish. Lager was a bit better.

(Rating #3842)

Rated at the brewery/restaurant Nov 2011. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted bread), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of smoke and apricot. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, slightly metallic. Pleasant albeit light, metallic, and...well...forgettable.

Braudog (6710) - Yorktown, Virginia, USA - DEC 11, 2011
Draft at the brewpub. Deep golden orange with a thin foamy head. Mellow smoke, especially following Schlenkerla, but it’s there. Sweet undertow, almost orangey. With a nice mellow, restrained rauch character, this is a good starter to the style. (#4388, 12/2/2011)

(draught) pours a slightly hazy deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of chewy roasted malts, herbal hops, straw, treebark and smoked ham, nicely integrated. flavour is mostly the same, with subtle smoke in the foreground and a minerally, mellow herbal-hoppy finish. medium-bodied with soft carbonation.
