The Spezial Festbier zum Jubiläum was a Rauchbier of Märzen strength brewed from only Vorderwürze, so no sparging. Only available during summer and fall 2011, to celebrate that the brewery is first mentioned in 1536, that is 475 years ago (not 850). Hazy brown, malty and slightly smoked aroma plus some hoppiness. Full taste of delicately smoked malts, some dark fruit (plums, raisins), then increasingly hoppy, but not harsh. Mouthfeel silky at first, drying out later on. Soft bitter aftertaste.

Draught at Spezial in November, 2011: Yellow gold. Broken white halo of foam. Middling aromas of smoked baguette with hints of mineral and sweet cookie. Foamy, seltzery carbonation. Firm and dry, upfront, with a cookie maltiness swirled with the delicate zestfulness of herbaceous and peppery hops and a hard snap of minerals. Malt exhibits a biscuity fluffiness with some pleasantly bouncy textures, as well. Teeters on husky with lots of straw flavors. Twinge of fruity acidity weakens the body as a mild raspiness from the smoke nestles into the palate. Closes breadily malty with a cleansing scrub of minerals and spicy hops underscoring the subdued milk chocolate depth. The upside is the cleanness, but ultimately it’s fairly straightforward and not overly characterful. Decent.

The head is robust and the body brown. The taste is smoky, a bit malty, a bit hoppy, good balanced. Nice one! 11/11/12/12/-/12

Rated at the brewery/restaurant Nov 2011. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted bread), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of smoke and apricot. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, slightly metallic. Pleasant albeit light, metallic, and...well...forgettable.

Draft at the brewpub. Deep golden orange with a thin foamy head. Mellow smoke, especially following Schlenkerla, but it’s there. Sweet undertow, almost orangey. With a nice mellow, restrained rauch character, this is a good starter to the style. (#4388, 12/2/2011)

[email protected] Nice smokiness in both aroma and flavour. Orange colour, beige head, good lace. Sweetish, bitter, malty, smoke. Yet still refreshing and easy going.

Beer No. 110 on my tour through Austria, Germany and Denmark.
Draught at the brewpub. Pale amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, smoke and malt in the nose. Light roasted malt, smoke and some toffee with pretty short fruity smokey finish. Lager was a bit better.

(draught) pours a slightly hazy deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of chewy roasted malts, herbal hops, straw, treebark and smoked ham, nicely integrated. flavour is mostly the same, with subtle smoke in the foreground and a minerally, mellow herbal-hoppy finish. medium-bodied with soft carbonation.
