Clear reddish brown color, off-white head. Malty, slight smoked, mellow scent. Malty, very lightly smoked taste. It is not over the top in your face kind of smoked beer, it has a delicate and nice balance to it. One of the best smoked beers out there, albeit far from the smokiest one. Great stuff. Medium mouthfeel, medium to medium low bitterness.
Bottle. Clear dark brown. Smoky sausage, some bread and a little black pepper aroma. Slightly bitter, very smoky, some hickory. Full body, soft fizz, mild smoly finish. NachlamSie (3581) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 4, 2017
500 mL draft serving at the restaurant. This was one of the most exciting beers for me to drink fresh. I've only had Spezial a couple times before and it was old and somehow light-struck, which is beyond me. Having it how it's supposed to be is absolutely amazing. It's still a crystalline amber with a frothy head. But the aroma is delightful with hearty, meaty smoke and a biscuity, caramelly malt backbone. Palate is medium full. Great smoke flavor throughout with a satisfying malt balance. Hops are barely there, but add appropriate bitterness. It was seemingly less smoky than Schlenkerla, but still had more true smoked aroma and flavor than many non-German breweries are willing to employ. Fantastic. tmrmwel (2279) - Bergen, NORWAY - JUL 16, 2017
Bottle, one month before bbd. Wow, this is a beauty! Pours mahogany, with a creamy, off white head. Aroma is smoked malts, with bread, bonfire and wooden barrels, as well as toffee, leather and heather. Medium body, with soft to average carbonation. Flavour is malts with bread, caramel and leather, as well as wooden barrels, bonfire and notes of smoke. Lingering smoked malts in the finish. Despite the massive smoke and malts, this beer is incredibly balanced and smooth. A quaffable sipper, if there ever was one. herrklemann (463) - Graz, AUSTRIA - JUL 1, 2017
Bottle, many thanks to SinH4! Dark red/brown amber, with a small beige head. Country ham, butterscotch, herbal, hints of dark soy sauce, dank, grassy. Medium sweetness builds up slowly, fades into herbal light bitterness with a dash of umami. Slick medium body, with pearly carbonation. Easily drinkable, nice.

Aroma of dry smoked ham with hints of maltiness, bit of molasses. Dark mahone in the glass with minimal beige head. Flavor of smoked ham, some notes of herbal hoppiness. Beer is well balanced, however - watery. Poor. biir (1632) - Berlin, - APR 18, 2017
