Visual: (cellared for 4 years). Pours dark cola brown without much of a head, almost no retention, barely visible spread out micro streams.

Nose: whiskey, brown sugar barley malt (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: immediate big sour acidity

Mid-palate: (lvl-4)-sweetness, light coffee, sour caramel roasted barley, burnt brown sugar, guarana berriness

Finish: chocolate, roasty burnt soft bitter hopped finish.

Summary: I’ve never had a sour CDA before and I suspect I might never come across another one, but once you do get past the sourness this is actually decently drinkable. It has a nice likeable balance of sour-barley guarana sweet-burnt coffee elements in it - Not what you’d imagine from CDA. Surprisingly agreeable despite my negative bias toward Spinnakers.

hahah on draft at brewery. I forgot about black IPAs. This is one of them. Roasty and piney. Bitter, off balance and difficult to drink but it gets points for nostalgia.

On tap at Spinnakers, pours a cloudy dark reddish brown with a small beige head - doesn’t look like a CDA. Aroma brings out light diacetyl, along with toasted malt and a touch of hoppy bitterness. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt, piney hops and some diacetyl. Looks bad, smells pretty off and tastes similar. Not a total disaster, but certainly needs some work.

Bottle from bottle store in Vancouver bc. This has what I can detect as maybe some rye and coriander and a weird medicinal smell. I wouldn't get this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Amazing dark pour with a big white head. The bitterness in the aftertaste overshadows everything that may be in this beer. Not awesome.

Gerbeer (3795) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 8, 2014
On tap. Pours a dark reddish brown with light white head. Aromas of sweet roasted malt with a mint of dark fruit. Flavors of dry roasted malts and flat bitter hops. Not much depth.
