Barley Wine Ale is a legendary top-fermented brew with a deep amber/orange color, and intense fruit and malt nose that is laced with alcohol accented by the sweet aromas of Port. This "wine" made with barley is brewed with a French yeast culture, and possesses a complex flavor of rich malt, fruit esters, and sherry-like qualities that is delicately balanced with hops.

16 oz. 2007 bottle. Malty aroma with slighy yeaty notes, like a sour dough pretzel. Lighter than expected color to the liquid. Thin sticky head. Slightly fruity taste with a fruity yeaty finish. Somewhat dry. No notice of hops at all and liking hoppy barelywines i.e. Victory Old Horizontal, this is not the best in my book.

2007 Vintage
From notes. Tasted on 6/30/12 at the 1st Annual Chimipalooza, from bottle. Pours clear dark orange with an average white head that leaves thin lace. The nose is sweet toffee and caramel with a lightly fruity touch. The flavor is fairly sweet caramel up front, moving to Wheaties cereal, and some lightly bitter toasted toffee. The body is full with average carbonation and a long toffee finish that has plenty of alcoholic heat.

Bottle. - Vintage 2007 - Boozy sweet plum, raisin and soured malts. Cloudy brown gold with a decent beige head. Caramel, butterscotch ans some raisin sweetness. Although some nice flavors, very thin and past it’s prime.

Bottle I received in a trade awhile back. Pours orange brown with off white head. Nose and taste of sweet malt, sherry, old fruit, yeast and caramel. medium body. Finishes with old citrus and alcohol.

11/08/2010: Sprecher Barley Wine Ale... Aroma: Toffee malt; slightly oxidized; a hint of port. Appearance: Mostly clear golden color; foamy ivory-colored head; really mild carbonation. Flavor: English-style with lots of malt and some depth; maltiness moves from caramel to toffee to fruity (date, berry notes, prune) to a nice little bitterness in the finish; soft notes of red wine. Palate: Medium-full body; smooth and creamy in the mouth. Overall: Quite good!

(bottle - 500 ml) Dark orange pour with a slick white head. Very sweet and caramel aroma with lots of toffee and sweet malts. Flavor is incredibly sweet as well. Caramel, toffee, raisins and other fruit flavors mix with a heavy malt middle and overly sweet aftertaste. A bit too much for me.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is classic barleywine, with a lot of caramel and toffee malt, as well as a hint of maple. The flavor is similar, with a lot sweetness from the caramel and toffee malt, as well as a good bit of alcohol and some maple. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I really liked this one.

Bottle of blutt59. Orangish amber brew with very little head. Aromas of port wine, toffee, and raisin - flavor is sugary and crazy alcoholic.

Pour is almost entirely clear orange-amber, with a nice looking 1/2 inch off white head. Aroma of big sweet fruitiness - pretty intense. Caramel and some leather round out the nose. Taste is more of the big fruit, though it is somewhere between raisins and juicy fruit gum, not a terribly good combination. The big fruit taste was highlighted by some pretty sharp heat as well, though this faded pretty quickly after the beer opened up. Nice full body. This one was good, but it was a bit less refined than most Barley Wines I have had. Regardless, nice to see Sprecher branching out. Thanks for this one Jason, I enjoyed it!

Gold wax. A hazed amber barley wine with a thin mocha head. In aroma, a strange sweet sour cherry with bizarre medicinal notes. In mouth, a spoiled lactic malt with sour cherries, Hall’s drops, infected barley wine. Blahhh! Shared with GRM.
