2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
While this beer is beautiful to look at, with great lacing in the head, its taste does not deliver, as its bitterness overshadows any scent of grapefruit or citrus flavors at the end of the sip. This BIPA has a definite smokey flavor throughout, but really leaves a bad after taste. I would expect Sprecher’s to have a better product than this.
Bottle. Date has been wiped off the bottle. Appearance is brown, semi-opaque. Lots of sediment present. Thin weak head, tiny bubbles. Aroma is high roasty, dark fruit, raisins, no hops on the nose. Flavor is roasty, smoky-burnt, roasted chocolate, low carbonation. Astringent. Bitterness is present but no hop flavor remains. Obviously well past it’s time. Dark brown color with a modest light tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, mild pine and hints of citrus. Flavors favor the malt, but bitterness has a definite resin and citrus component. Decent balance. One of the more drinkable Black IPAs I’ve had. Fritz123 (1535) - Boca Raton, Florida, USA - JUL 18, 2015
Bottle from Lizardville in Akron. Pours a deep brown with some small head and no lacing. The aroma is heavy roasted or burnt malts and anise. The taste was very burt malts, anise, and some burnt toast. Not the greatest flavors for a lack IPA. Unbalanced. Bork (455) - Rosewood, Georgia, USA - NOV 16, 2014
Gorgeous but disappointing black brew, hardly reminiscent of an IPA at all. Some toasted, earthy notes in both aroma and flavor, but in the end all that remains is a rather tart, burnt bitterness. degbert (1773) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUL 5, 2014
Bottle. Pours an opaque brown-black with a high, light-tan head. Nose is slightly citrusy but mostly floral; there’s a little spice to it as well. Roasty on the palate; it’s almost burnt tasting, a pretty intense black-coffee and ash flavor that never quite resolves into anything really hoppy. The black definitely outweighs the IPA, and the finish never really delivers on the hops either. There’s a little herbal and citrus bitterness, but not much. There are better examples of the style.

Aroma of roasted malts with hints of citrus. Pours a brownish black with a tan ring and minimal lacing. The taste is initially malty with a nod to citrus and a hoppy bitter finish. Delightful. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, a very robust well balanced Black IPA. Ferris (15586) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 24, 2014
Bottle - Molasses and dark fruit. Deep jet brown with a decent light brown head. Burnt chocolate and malts with a lingering bitterness. No IPA here. beerbaaron (1998) - Arizona, USA - FEB 8, 2014
Bottle from brewery. Pours black. Small creamy beige head, mostly dissipating with some decent lace. Aroma is earthy, toasty, cardboard, maybe a little floral - not too enticing. Lighter, rather thin body. Flavor is bitter hops with mild sweetness. Finishes quite dry, sharpish grapefruit-like bitterness. Not very easy drinking. I did not enjoy. I don’t know, it doesn’t smell like much to me. The soles of new tennis shoes. Sweet, perfume, floral.
Taste has a very bitter finish. Bitter hops, a tiny bit of sweetness. sjohnny (636) - - NOV 28, 2013
Pine, floral, malty aroma. Pours black with a very foamy lasting light tan head. Very thin bodied. Roasty initial flavor followed by a light bitterness that coats the tongue. Not bad but I wouldn't go out of my way to get any more.
