Barley Wine Ale is a legendary top-fermented brew with a deep amber/orange color, and intense fruit and malt nose that is laced with alcohol accented by the sweet aromas of Port. This "wine" made with barley is brewed with a French yeast culture, and possesses a complex flavor of rich malt, fruit esters, and sherry-like qualities that is delicately balanced with hops.

Wittales (762) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - NOV 9, 2012
Appearance was clear deep amber brown with creamy tannish diminishing tiny head, no lacing. Aromas are sweet brown sugar, deep fruits of fig, date with sherry-like notes. Taste was sweet sherry mild alcohol with hints of date and fig. Palate was smooth flat CO2 with full body, then sherry sweet smooth lasting finish. Great barley wine...

2005 edition. Huge bottle shared by someone at the Holiday tasting. Pours a dark copper color with a large white head. The aroma is really nice; rich fruity hops, sherry like sweetness. A sweet fruity flavor, some hops but not like the nose, dry with loads of caramel. Nice.

DocLock (10683) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 16, 2010
Cellared swing top 750 from the Doc Lock cellar. Pours clear dark coppery toward ruby with minimal off-white head. Nose is very caramelly, malty, vinous fruity, with Wheaties and honey. Tastes of malt, hefty red winey vinous fruit, honey, hops, earthy notes, and a bit light on complexity and palate heft. Very fruity, ut a bit watery late, although with well hidden alcohol. Decent, and if I could get this again without paying an arm and a leg, I would jump on that opportunity.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a small tan head. Has a malty caramel aroma with oaky hints. Sweet malty and sour ripe fruit flavor with hints of oak and vanilla. Hasa a slightly sour malty fruity finish with some oaky hints.

ThomasE (5174) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - SEP 5, 2008
Cloudy amber colour with a beige head. Sweet malty aroma with overripe fruity notes and a misplaced acidic note. Quite sour and infected flavor.

Papsoe (25063) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JUL 30, 2008
(Bottle 100 cl) Courtesy of Skyview. Hazy amber golden with a beige head. Distict aroma of oak and vanilla. Medium body with notes of caramel, wood and vanilla with everything being overpowered by a very distinct sourness. Subdued bitterness. Wauw, amazing how a Barley Wine this strong can end up with an infection this bad. But still enough interesting parts to enjoy in this although the sourness is impossible to ignore. 260708

KimJohansen (10492) - Frederiksberg C, DENMARK - JUL 30, 2008
Hazy dark amber with medium beige head. Sweet aroma with toasted malt, caramel and ripe fruits. Sweet and sour flavor with roasted malt, caramel and ripe fruits. Infected.

Ungstrup (37574) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - JUL 27, 2008
Bottled - tasted blind. A hazy amber beer with a thin lazing orangey head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel and over ripe fruits, but also a hint of acidity. The flavor is sweet amlty with notes of caramel as well as an acidic tart horseblanket note. How can a BW turn out like this?

yespr (45439) - Copenhagen O, DENMARK - JUL 27, 2008
From bottle #7 at sk8vikings American blind tasting. Pours hazy orange with a lacing off-white head. Milky lacto bacteria and spiced aroma. Citric and woody flavour with dense caramel malt base. Chalky and woody finish going into a short acidic note. Not good.
