Our India Pale Ale (I.P.A.) is a delicious take on an English classic. Brewed using an English hop variety called Fuggles, which produce a pleasant soft woody, earthy and floral aroma in the beer. The beer is balanced with a medium hop bitterness that compliments the medium depth of the malt base.

Nice looking beer, nice lacing. Aroma is low malt and medium kiwi hops, maybe sticklebract, only a trace of the fuggles promised, could be NZ fuggles i suppose. Nice subtle crystal malt character in the flavour. Harsh bitterness, astringent finish. Not too bad but not what I was hoping for.

Draft at Sprig & Fern in Nelson. Clear amber with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is earthy, tea, caramel, toast, like an ESB. Flavor is malty, caramel and toast, decent earthy hop bitterness. Medium body, feel falls a bit flat. I guess English IPAs are like this, but it’s not terribly compelling as a beer.

On tap at Spring and Fern, Hardy St. Peach, lemon, toffee. Not much bitterness, little sweetness. All a bit nothing really.

2016-05-22. Crisp amber body, modest beige head. 3+ Modest hoppy aroma, caramel malt. Flavour is similar, with moderate fruity hops and bitterness throughout. Average bodied palate, good carbonation. Pretty standard malt forward IPA. 7/3-4/7/3/14 On tap at Sprig and Fern - Milton, Nelson, NZ.

Nothing special. An okay ipa. Leaves a residue in your mouth. Poured from plastic bottle dark brown and no head

Bottle. Amber brown color, hazy liquid. Taste like polotmavy style - roasted malt and bread in aroma. Average.

Draft in Franz Josef, 11/9/2014. Pours a copper color, cloudy, thin creamy head, nice lacing around the glass. Aroma is caramel, biscuit, round pear and melon, thin grassy finish. Taste is mild citrus and grassy hops, a touch spicy, lingering sweet straw finish, caramel pronounced. Thin body, drinkable and quite quaffable. Decent, grows on you.

Keg - Sprig & Fern, Wellington. A clear bronzed amber colour that poured with a fine yet lasting a uniformly lacing off-white head. Toasted malts, yeast, biscuit and yeast coupled with dry, citric, grassy hops. Medium body, soft carbonation and mouthfeel with a dry, lingering finish. An IPA less in the out and out ’hop bomb’ way but focused on balance and hop/malt interplay.

Chestnut brown with a medium off white head. Your basic caramel and red apple American amber malt with a wood and nut Chinook hop character. Spice, pepper, earth notes. Highly sweet with medium bitterness, malt has some roughness and the carbonation is a little flat, altogether giving it some flabbiness and syrupiness. Under-fermented by design. No glaring faults but nothing inspiring or imaginative either. This was a Monday, our helicopter hike on Franz Josef Glacier was delayed for three hours due to weather (eventually cancelled), so I drank and rated some Sperm and Fig beer on the patio and watched the NFL playoffs taking place 20 hours before on Sunday back in the states. From draft.
