The story of the Seven Gates comes from rural Pennsylvania, not far from the Spring House Brewery. According to the legend, a mental asylum for the criminally insane stood in the middle of a dense forest. Surrounding the asylum were seven concentric gates, preventing would-be escapees. One terrifying night, the asylum caught fire, causing the inmates to flee into the menacing forest. As the tale goes, the former asylum residents were trapped by the seven gates, and eventually succumbed to the perils of the forest. The locals swear that the tormented souls of the inmates will torture anyone brave enough to attempt passage through the Seven Gates of the forest.

Spring House Brewing Co. honors the local legend by producing a terrifyingly delicious brew that is as familiar as a friendly forest, yet possesses a mysterious quality that will haunt you from the first taste. The enormous, hopped flavor and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each bottle will have you believing that the master brewer must be a direct descendant of the former asylum residents.

Note: Formerly contract brewed at Appalachian.

Bottle from Phillybeer1779, thanks! Pours a hazy gold with some chunky yeast floaties. Nose is some citrus American hops but a little bland and some caramelly malt. Taste is very similar and light on the hops. Good mouthfeel. Bottle is probably no too fresh so I will try it again.

Pours a pale golden amber with a smaller white head, ok lacing... aroma is a touch on the sweet malty side... A touch malty, not very sweet, some toasted flavors, not a great deal of hoppiness, decent flavor, not hoppy enough for my taste... easy drinking, medium light body...

A: snifter. nice slightly opaque copper color. big orange hues. atop is a nice light khaki colored head. mild retention rate and fair ringlike lacing. S: aromas of apples, light butterscotch, and mostly a mild malt aroma. hint of hops. T: nice flavor for an APA. good sweet malt backbone, some fruit flavors, like apples and cherries, very faint. good pine and citrus hop flavors in this one. some caramel as well. M: medium bodied, mild carbonation level, actually spot on. very clean and smooth. D: very nice APA and well worth getting if you dig the style. I got this from a BIF and it was a great get, wish these guys were available where I am.

Having a bad streak today - third beer and all of them have been mediocre. This one has a yeasty aroma, and it does have a nice burnt orange color with an off white head and lots of soapy lacing. Flavor is more malty than I expected, with a little bitterness in the finish.

[Draft @ Spring House Brewery] Darker golden color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, skunk, toast, and citrus. Taste of citrus fruits, toasted malts, some pine, and light skunk with some bitterness in the finish as well.

12oz bottle shared by largadeer. Pours clear golden with a small white head that fades. Smells like caramel and pale malt with slight resinous hops. Tastes a bit faded with caramel and pale malts, apple, and faint floral, earthy, and resinous hops. Boring mouthfeel. Damn it, I hate that this is from the burg and sucks. Oh well.

Copper, white fizzy head. Light toasty citric flavors with a faint swirl of toast. Caramel biscuit flavor rounds with a hint of citrus in the finish. Light bodied, soft carbonation, slightly offensive finish. This needs some serious help...
