Bottle shared at the chriso Snow Tasting in London - thanks to Jan. Pours dark, brown-black with a creamy, beige head. The nose holds some alcohol and iodine, dark malts, roast. Big sweet flavor with dark sugars, prominent alcohol/barrel character, understated roast. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Hot finish with more dark malts, dark chocolate, wood. Pulling this out of the cellar was a nice break. The base beer might not have been all that interesting but throwing it into High West barrels was a nice way to at least make it an average BA imperial stout. If you have one left I would drink it sooner rather than later; it feels like it is beginning to slip.
Aroma / Appearance - A fluid black base bubbles with a cream deep head for company. Clingy legs add a nice touch. Plums, raspberries, dark chocolate, and sticky malt are on par with other releases but the barrel aging does not really stand out much.
Flavor / Palate - Chocolate, espresso, rich truffle, and velvet are a welcome texture that warms the palate. The polished mouthfeel is a trace on the sweet side with a touch of Hershey’s chocolate syrup. A boozy warm finish brings to a close a well rounded release. While the High West whiskey barrels do not seem to do much they did possibly mellow out the heat. Overall this was a nice release though one I would not seek out again.
750mL bottle. Poured inky black with a rich brown head. The aroma picked up sweet whiskey, burnt cocoa, and just a touch of hazelnut.. coconut and lightly-smoked malts plus peppery warmth on the back of the nose.. very nice. The flavor found burnt black and cocoa malts at the core, with vanilla, coconut, and sweet and peppery bourbon laced throughout.. spicy and roasty on the back end and through the finish along with a nice kiss of bourbon. Heavy-bodied and roasty on the palate with quite a bit of cocoa/coffee bitterness.. warm, but never overly so.. this was great stuff!
