La stout impériale russe St-Ambroise est un hommage québécois aux stouts impériales anglaises de la fin du XVIieme siècle, qui étaient brassées pour la cour de l’impératrice russe Catherine II la Grande.

Faite d’un mélange de malts d’orge, la Stout impériale russe St-Ambroise est infusée aux houblons Cascade, Goldings et Willamette, ce qui lui donne un caractère houblonné remarquable avec une finale moelleuse. Brassée avec du bois vieilli dans le bourbon, cette ale corsée se distingue par son riche arôme fumé aux accents de vanille, d’expresso et de chocolat.

Servir la Stout impériale russe St-Ambroise entre 13°C et 15°C, de préférence dans un verre à porto ou un ballon à brandy. Comme cette bière se bonifie avec le temps, il est recommandé de la conserver dans un lieu frais et sombre durant quelques années.

St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is Quebec’s tribute to the late 1700’s English Imperial Stouts, brewed for the Russian courts of Catherine the Great.
Made from a blend of barley malts, St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is infused with Cascade, Goldings and Willamette hops, resulting in an outstanding hop-character with a smooth finish. Bourbon wood-aged, this full-bodied ale has a rich, smoky aroma with hints of vanilla, expresso and chocolate.

Serve St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout between 13°C and 15°C, preferably in a port glass or a brandy snifter. This stout will improve with age for a number of years. Store in a cool, dark place.

-2013- bottle drank Nov 8, 2013. Happy International Stout Day! Looks fricking great! Pours black as midnight with a thick and creamy, one finger, mocha head that slowly fades to a film. Leaves mild lacing. Aroma is noticeable from a foot away. Big notes of bitter and milk chocolate, roasted malts, and bourbon. Everything balanced and not over done. Taste starts with chocolate, roasted malt, and bourbon, then ends in a big, almost espresso, bitter. Roasty/chocolaty aftertaste with a dry finish. Full body with a low-medium carbonation. Creamy in the mouth with a very slight alcohol warmth. Not nearly as sweet or cloying as other Imperial stouts I’ve had. This brew is extremely smooth and drinkable. Overall fantastic and should be tried by all. A warm and inviting aroma paired with a sublime taste delivered with an "oh so drinkable" mouth feel. This is what I will compare all Imperial stouts to from now on. As hard as it is for me to believe I’ve heard that this gets better with age. I can’t wait to try some vertical tasting with the 2011, 2012, and 2013 bottles when the 2014 comes out. If you can get this, get it and get a few. It is worth the price and worth stocking up on. I WILL be buying more!

Pours a deep brown-black with a dark tan head. Super chocolatey, slightly smoked with some vanilla notes. Roasty, chocolatey, smoked, some dry tannin notes, and light boozy vanilla Bourbon character. Notes: bottle from Montreal visit, Dec '16, opened Sep '17.

Kolor: Czarny jak smoła.
Piana: Brązowa, bardzo ciemna, wysoka, zwarta. Ma ona hiper-drobną strukturę i tworzy jedną warstwę. Piana powoli redukuje się do wąskiej otoczki. Książkowy lacing na szkle. Niedawno piłem RISa z Dieu du Ciel i miał bardzo podobną pianę.
Zapach: Odkręcana buteleczka ;) To jest to co lubię. Charakterystyczne dla craftu rodem z Kanady. Wszystkie piwka z Brasserie Dieu du Ciel mają tą samą objętość buteleczek (341ml) i również odkręcane kapselki. Woń unosząca się nad buteleczką to z całą pewnością solidna bourbonowa i beczkowa nuta. Wyraźnie czuć dębinę i lekkie nutki wanilii. Nad całością powiewa spora paloność, sporo czekolady i ciemne słody. Po chwili dołącza do zespołu zapach karmelu, kawy i odrobina toffi.
Smak: W smaku od początku do końca gładkie i kremowe. Profil smakowy buduje duża porcja ciemnych słodów, intensywne palone nuty, gorzka czekolada i aromatyczne espresso. Profil beczkowy bardziej przygaszony, niż pokazywał to aromat. Tutaj bardziej skłaniałbym się w stronę płatków dębowych i płatków bourbonowych, niż samej beczki po bourbonie. Wyraźnie wychodzi drewniany, lekko dymiony charakter trunku. Po ogrzaniu pokazały się nawet jakieś ciemne owoce. Piwo natomiast jest świetnie zbalansowane. Paloność, ani drewniany charakter nie są na tyle dominujące, aby zepsuć całą zabawę. Goryczka ma średnią siłę, umiarkowany, ale zrównoważony palony finisz. Dobrze zamaskowany alkohol i półpełne ciało.
Wysycenie: Niskie.
St-Amroise Stout Impériale Russe to piwo wywodzące się z Montrealu w prowincji Quebec. Uwarzone zostało przez browar Brasserie McAuslan. Świetny Russian Imperial Stout. Bardziej w klimacie wytrawnym, niż słodkim, ale z doskonałą równowagą poszczególnych składowych. Nuty drewna, płatków drzewnych, dębiny z lekkim bourbonowym tłem. Delikatna wanilia, gorzka czekolada, kawa espresso i dymiony charakter tworzą piwo niezapomniane. Dostojnego chatakteru dodaje trunkowi smolista czerń i ciemna, brązowa piana. Piękne opakowanie, tuba dla podkreślenia wysokiej jakości produktu. Dziękuję niezawodnemu jak zawsze Piotrkowi Pokorze za ten prezent i przywiezienie z Kanady tego zacnego napitku!😃🍺

Pours a very small brownish head and doesn’t stay long. Has an extremely dark appearance, pitch black pretty much. Alcohol scent is pretty noticeable at first, then aromas of dark chocolates, coffee and mild goldings and cascade like hops comes through. Very nice. Flavours are fairly bitter with resin and spiced hops, some dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. Wood aged in bourbon, it comes through fairly abundantly. Also notes of nuts and toast. Slick and oily mouthfeel. Warming tingling sensation. Lively carbonation. Pretty darn good. Aged it for about a year and enjoyed it July 17th/’13. Very good indeed.

2012, vieillie 4 ans et demi. Un liquide noir comme la nuit coule dans le verre, aucun rayon de lumière ne parvient à passer au travers, mousse brune se dissipant rapidement pour ne laisser qu’un anneau autour du verre. Au nez, chocolat noir, vanille, céréales torréfiées, caramel, bourbon, fruits séchés. Au goût, elle a super bien vieillie, beau sucre résidul, chocolat noir, finale quelque peu cendré. C’est délicieux!

toffsbury (121) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 21, 2017
2016 bottle, opened April 2017. Deep rich black with thin, swirling brown head. Aroma is full of bourbon, booze, smoky wood and fruits, with some molasses and other delicious things. Palate is thick and full like an imperial stout should be. Taste of vanilla and rich dark malts, but somewhat overwhelmed by burnt malt character. I suspect this will go away with age, as this is a fairly young bottle and an extremely age-worthy beer. Aroma: 9. Appearance: 5. Taste: 7. Palate: 5. Overall: 17. Total: 4.3. 2013 bottle: same look as the young bottle, but the aroma - such aroma! Booziness is toned down, while the scent of Madagascar vanilla blooms along with a tiny hint of plum. Taste: the burnt taste has toned down, but there’s a strong metallic tinge that emerges. This calms down with warmth. Hop bitterness is present but not overdone. Very nice. Aroma: 10. Appearance: 5. Taste: 8. Palate: 5. Overall: 18. Total: 4.6.

Bierdimpfe (640) - Quebec, CANADA - FEB 28, 2017
2015 Edition, a year old bottle : Opaque black color, very dense. Creamy and foamy brown 3 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes. Strong lacing, thick legs, a swirl slightly reconstructs the head. Flavors of wood, leather, oysters, dark malts, raisins, plums, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, herbal spices. Thick rich fruity sweetness, while heavily bitter, spicy, and earthy. Creamy and milky medium body with soft prickly carbonation. Highly strong dry finish, deeply earthy, thick herbal and chalky espresso feel on the tongue, fruity esters and burnt malt sugars, lots of dark chocolate and vanilla at the end, hints of liquorice and peppercorn, with a nice bourbon barrel aged feel that lingers a for while. Not very fresh, but not alcoholic, yet incredibly warming and filling. Good intensity, not excessive, still enjoyable. Complex flavors, very tasty and incredibly rich, all well balanced and easily distinguishable. The perfect winter beer after a cold day outside. Feels like a cross between a barley wine, sweet stout, and wee heavy. Overall superb quality craft.

Appearance: Pours a body as black as motor oil with a surprisingly dark brown (like an Aero chocolate bar) bordering almost on a light black head. Huge and thick that lasts a long time. Very impressive. Smell: An aroma of bourbon, vanilla, espresso & chocolate. A nice medley of aromas. Taste: At first i thought it was discreet but definitely opens up. Bitter-sweet chocolate (like baking chocolate), espresso beans, with a very good supporting role by the hops. Was actually pleasantly surprised by the nice hop presence. Can definitely taste the oak as it seems drenched in liquor, bourbon and maybe a little whiskey. Very good & flavorful. Mouthfeel: Weak point of the beer IMO. Low carbonation with a very smooth body but i found it a little lacking and maybe a bit thin & watery. Not much really but not as robust as an RIS should be. It’s still good but not RIS good.

Cellared since 2013. Pitch black with grey head. I get coffee, chocolate, vanilla. It’s also a little boozy. But it’s also extremely smooth and creamy.

Appearance: opaque unrelieved black with two fingers of creamy dark brown head, good retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: toasty malt, boozy dark fruit, chocolate, marshmallow, leather and tobacco, oak, bourbon, vanilla. (8/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, high bitter. (8/10) Full viscous body, moderate-soft carbonation, lingering bitter and warming finish verging on astringent. (4/5) Considering I’ve now collected four different vintages of this one, I figured it was time to try it new, just to establish a baseline. I’m glad I did: I’m not disappointed by it, as such, but I feel like there’s room for improvement, and I suspect ageing might accomplish some of that improvement. As it stands now, as a young RIS, it’s definitely hot, with some edges that I think (hope?) ageing might smooth. In particular, it feels to me like both the alcohol heat and the slight astringent thinning in the finish could stand to mellow. Very good, but I have high hopes that it will exceed that some day. I’d recommend buying at least two, with the intention of ageing one, but you won’t be disappointed by trying it fresh, either. (16/20)

12oz bottle shared with Julien. 2013 version. Pours jet black with a light foamy mocha head. Smells of dark fruits, berries, a bit of cocoa and roasted coffee and malts. Roasty flavor, slight vanilla and cocoa, some boozy and way too much fruits. Good mouthfeel, seems promising but the flavor just doesn’t pull through. Disappointed in this one but still enjoyed it. The 2015 is MUCH better.
